Funny that this Esquire article should come back...I kept this issue of Esquire from 2002. At the time I read it, I thought, "this is just the beginning." So many things that John DiIulio said were disturbing and I knew that Rove and his cohorts would try to ruin this guy...mainly because he was telling the truth...that Bush and company had no clue what they were doing and exposed how ugly and pathological they could be. I also found the article very sad...that this administration, whom many trusted (not me!) to do the right thing were only interested in furthering their position of power, influence and wealth. I am not sure what happened to DiIulio...hopefully he is leading a normal life somewhere and Rove didn't ruin him. In any case, I am sure that he is not enjoying what has been going on the last six years...that what he said five years ago could be even more true now than then.
It is time for the Democrats to do what Bill Maher has been telling them to do all year...stand up to these assholes! If Harry Reid does respond (it would probably be better if he doesn't) he should say "Hell yes, I criticized Pace as being incompetent because he was." Why is that so hard for the Democrats to say? If they hope to win the next election, they are going to have to stand up to these bullies, especially Guiliani. He will spout out the same nonsense that this administration has been for the last six years. He is just as bad as Bush! The Democrats are going to have to get some balls!!!
Hillary is SMART! That is important. More important than her being likable. So many people voted for Bush because they "liked" him. Look where that has gotten us. In the end, all that matters is what kind of president she will make. For those who have read her book you know that she is very knowledgable about foreign policy, she has travelled everywhere and her experience in the Senate is invaluable too. And people have to admit - even if you don' t like him - having Bill there to clean up the mess that Bush has created with foreign countries - would be a HUGE asset. They still love BILL! I can't say that I love Hillary but this time around, after the disaster that is Bush, it is time for Americans to make an intelligent decision. There is too much riding on this election to elect someone they "like." We must elect the best person for the job.
This article says it all. I do not have any faith in our press anymore. They are all in bed with Bush and this administration. It reminds me of what David Halberstam said - "The more famous you are, the less of a journalist you are." That is so true! Tim Russert is a perfect example of this. Bush and company actually use Meet the Press for their own interests leaking stories and then going on Sunday to talk about what they leaked. Tim Russert just sits there not challenging anything they say. Cheney is a master of this! The problem is that Russert cannot ask tough questions and then have dinner with these people. And he is so immersed in "their" world, he doesn't see (or maybe he doesn't care)how any of this is playing with "regular" folks. For those of you who saw the Bob Moyers special on the press a couple of months ago, you know that there are some reporters (Knight Ridder) who are interested in the truth who are not buddies with Rove and Tony Snow. The problem is that these stories are not on the front page and most people are not reading them. I don't see any of this changing as long as massive corporations own all of these publications. I agree with Glenn that we will look back on this as a very embarassing time for the American press.
I agree wholeheartedly with you! I heard Romney say in one of the debates that he would have 2 Guantanamos if he could and no one even reported on it. This is an outrageous statement and no journalists even talked about it (that I know of...someone tell me if I am wrong). It should have been on the nightly news but they are too busy talking about Paris Hilton's release from jail. Is this the kind of President people want? Someone who condones and even encourages torture? Who knows if he even believes this? I think he would say ANYTHING to get elected. Why else would he keep changing his stance on nearly everything? He is as fake as a candidate can be and reminds me of another candidate...GWB. If that isn't enough to scare you, I don't know what is!
Can someone explain to me why everything bad that Bush does gets compared to something Clinton did? Who cares? I don't remember bad things that Reagan did being compared to Carter. The Clinton presidency is in the past. Conservatives need to move on. I am so tired of hearing about Marc Rich. What does it have to do with Libby? Who cares that Libby was Rich's attorney? It just doesn't matter! Where did this mentality come from? It sounds like schoolchildren!
Who is this James Randall person? It looks like Cheney under an alias. Who else but someone in this administration would write something so idiotic? And he chooses to write this letter to Paglia? That says it all! Laughable!!
