  • Hope the youth vote improves things

[Read the article: Young voters are stoked]

My generation, the boomer generation, has been a total disappointment in elected office, despite the history of rebellion in the sixties, the anti-war movement, the civil rights movement, etc.

What we've gotten out of our generation is Bill Clinton and G.W. Bush continuing the Reagan War on Drugs, which imprisons millions of people for a victimless crime. The continuous pushing of 'free' trade, so American corporations can export American jobs to 3rd world nations where people work for pennies an hour, and workers have no rights. The continuation of more of the same American foreign policy, which arms, finances, and backs dictators and sham 'democracies' all over the world which continue to oppress hundreds of millions of people. In other words, more of the same as Johnson, Nixon, and Reagan. No change there.

Hopefully their generation can do better.

  • Panask

For example, in Genesis, God tells Adam and Eve that if they eat the fruit, "On that day thou shalt die." But they eat the fruit, and they DON'T die on that day. Any reader not already immersed in Christian belief would look at that and say something strange is going on - God was wrong, or he changed his mind, or he lied. Which would lead to questioning the literal truth of the story.

But if you're "lucky," some silver-tongued minister will explain to you that "by 'die,' God meant 'die spiritually,' which they did."

I believe the meaning of God's proclamation is that after eating the fruit, beginning on that day, Adam and Eve would now die; whereas before they were everlasting, and would have never died.

It's fine that you believe that. But it's not what it says. "On that day thou shalt die." Not, "become mortal, and die at some later time."

    Panask,

No, thats not what it says. I don't know what translation your using, but the original Hebrew doesn't say that, nor do any of the translations I checked. What your reading is a paraphrased translation, or something you misremember. The King James Version has:

Genesis 3:3 But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.

Which is closer to the original Hebrew, which has the words pen muwth:

pen {pane} Meaning: conj 1) lest, not, beware lest adv 2) lest Origin: from 06437; TWOT - 1780 Usage: AV - lest, that...not, peradventure; 4

muwth {mooth} Meaning: 1) to die, kill, have one executed 1a) (Qal) 1a1) to die 1a2) to die (as penalty), be put to death 1a3) to die, perish (of a nation) 1a4) to die prematurely (by neglect of wise moral conduct) 1b) (Polel) to kill, put to death, dispatch 1c) (Hiphil) to kill, put to death 1d) (Hophal) 1d1) to be killed, be put to death 1d1a) to die prematurely

    Other translations:

Revised Standard Version: Genesis 3:3 but God said, `You shall not eat of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, neither shall you touch it, lest you die.'"

New American Bible: Genesis 3:3 it is only about the fruit of the tree in the middle of the garden that God said, 'You shall not eat it or even touch it, lest you die.'"

New Jerusalem Bible: Genesis 3:3 But of the fruit of the tree in the middle of the garden God said, "You must not eat it, nor touch it, under pain of death." '

Douay Rheims: Genesis 3:3 But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of paradise, God hath commanded us that we should not eat; and that we should not touch it, lest perhaps we die.

If someone steals my dog and phones me to collect a ransom, and I say, 'if you hurt my dog, you will die', does that mean the dognapper will die that day? No, it means he will die sometime in the future when I can catch him.

  • Hillary a Christian?

[Read the article: The Democrats' God problem]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

The former first lady confided, "I have ever since I've been a little girl felt the presence of God in my life. And it has been a gift of grace that has for me been incredibly sustaining. But, really, ever since I was a child, I have felt the enveloping support and love of God. And I have had the experiences on many, many occasions where I felt like the holy spirit was there with me as I made a journey."

Hillary is no more a follower of Christ then George Bush is, in other words, not at all. (If they followed Christ they never would have invaded Iraq, for starters, or committed countless other crimes). But Hillary's problem is she isn't as good as liar as Bush, and doesn't sound convincing claiming to be Godly. She just can't lie to and con the yahoos as good the Republicans, a serious weakness if your running for president.

  • The Conservative Mass Media

[Read the article: Scott McClellan on the "liberal media"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Why don't people start calling the media what it really is, the Conservative Mass Media, instead of parroting the myth of the "Liberal Media". Or perhaps better terms might be the Reactionary Mass Media, or the Fascist Mass Media.

  • Bobby was assinated in June.

[Read the article: The fight over Florida and Michigan]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Considering Bobby Kennedy was assassinated in June, Hilary should stay in the race. Things happen.

I only mean that Bobby Kennedy was still running in June. Its totally normal to invoke an assassination to make a point, and not mean anything to do with the assassination. Normal people do this all the time. Anyone who thinks otherwise is obviously a misogynist.
