The advice given here is applicable to any situation or relationship that is poisioning one's life. At its core is the essential truth that each of us is responsaible for our own sense of satisfaction and happiness with life. It reaffirms the following prescription: Consider your options - thinking it through - understand the forseeable consequences - recognize that there may be unintended cosequences - make a decision - take ation, and accept responsibility for the outcome.

I encounter many people who hate their lives, and refuse to consider ways to change their situation in order to achieve satisfaction or happiness. Many blame the others in their lives for their state of despair. It takes courage to intitiate change.

A globalized economy is not in the interest of the American people in the absence an equal playing field. The creation of that playing field is not a simple matter. Additionally, as noted by others who have commented, the speed/pace of outsourcing contributes to its negative economic impact on the lives of displaced workers as well as to society as a whole. I have seen no credible evidence that either now or in the forseeable future, that globalization as implemented to date, will benefit anyone other than multinational corporations who contribute little to nothing to our local or national economies.

In addition, consumer patronage of some of these entities, such as Wal-Mart, is an invitation to join them in their exploitation of impoversihed and desperate workers world wide. It is this fact that is most intolerable to me. I cannot abide by it. Those who continue their patronage of such entitites are close to morally bankrupt.

Too many people have been brain washed into believing that there is nothing to be done about either.

Reynolds essay is brillian and on target. I would say he is light years a head of his time.

  • Allie Has it Right

[Read the article: Inside the Creation Museum]

Allie posted a letter that appears on page 1 of this stream. Her point is well taken - how does one reason with people who lack intelligence? The sad reality is that people who believe the creationist nonsence, those who adhere to a literal intepretation of the bible, who are ignorant of the history of the world, are not likely to ever see the fallacy of their views. They simply cannot. I do not care whether they can be saved. What is worrisome is when their views become the basis for public policy. Where do those who understand the truth draw the line? How committed are we to protecting our shared social institutions from those who believe essentially in magic? Perhaps the wizard behind the curtain has the answer.

  • My Optimisim is on its death bed

[Read the article: Free speech for the rich and powerful]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Howard Zinn wrote an essay titled " The Optimisim of Uncertanity". It has served as a pep talk to keep striving despite the darkness of the times. I keep it by my bed, to read again each time I feel despair at the direction of our nation and the world. Of late, it seems that I reach for it too frequently - and each time I do, the weight of the darkness, an example of which is so clearly discussed in Epps' article on the three 1st Amendement speech cases, grows heavier, and I feel the death of hope hovering over me. I wonder whether there will be a reincarnation thereafter and what form it shall take.

  • The T word

In bbqx77's comment to the Mooney article, he/she suggests that if only we did not have to pay taxes . . . we pay for our own health care without blinking an eye, afford wonderful homes without crushing debt, pay to send our kids to Harvard, retire with dignity, etc, etc, ba hum bug!

I ask that bbqx77 look beyond the amoral virtues of Ann Rynd selfishness. Stop trying to con hard working Americans into believing the utter economic nonsense espoused by the greedy. Read books like (1) The Great Risk Shift (Hacker), (2) The Disposed American: Layoffs and their Consequences (Uchitelle), (3) Nickle and Dimed and also Bait & Swiitch (Ehrenreich). Force yourself to watch the documentary Sicko. Finally, you need to stop acting as if your libertarian views have the same factual legitimacy as gravity. We "liberals" want to make sure you are not left out in the cold when your old and sick should your thrift and prudence be for naught and your investments evaporate. We are all in the same boat. An injury to one is an injury to all.
