peabody award

"He emphasized on several occasions that after I wrote my post on Tuesday, it was announced that Ross had been awarded a Peabody for a story he worked on last year. "

Sorry for my ignorance, but, is the Peabody award as prestigious as the Excellence Award that Rush Limbaugh received just recently? See

Shiite Al-Qaida??

This is getting better. According to the news last night (channel 9, LA), US troops engaged in a battle with Al-Qaida fighters in a _Shiite_ neighborhood of Baghdad.

Iraqi police know knew what to expect

Glenn: One additional point, minor, but perhaps worth mentioning. An excerpt from the BBC report:

"... the police received an urgent radio message from the Joint Operations Centre saying that US helicopters were about to raid the area. The police disappeared immediately."

The Iraqi police clearly knew what to expect from their US allies.

if noone cares, why flip?

." When you talk to people close to the campaign about this, they say stuff like: "Come on, who really cares about that issue? "

This argument makes no sense. If noone cares, then why to flip?

"Does anyone think the left is going to vote for McCain rather than Obama? "

"When you talk to people close to the campaign about this, they say stuff like: "Come on, who really cares about that issue? Does anyone think the left is going to vote for McCain rather than Obama? "

It's hard for me to believe those people would have so little understanding of what's involved here. It's not about whether the left will vote for McCain. It's about whether those who supported the Obama of January'07 will have enough enthusiasm left to vote at all, not to mention getting others to vote.

For the Obama of January'07, I would have marked November 4 on my calendar weeks in advance, rescheduled my business trips, taken a day off from work, if needed, ignored aching back or flu, skipped a meal, found a babysitter, and whatever other obstacle would come up, I'd find a way around it, to make sure to make it to the polling place and cast my vote. And I would dragged my wife with me and called my relatives and friends to get them to go.

For the Obama of July'07, will I go vote if I get sick or if something urgent comes up at work? Not sure. And spending a few hours calling or emailing others, to remind them about voting, does not seem like it's worth my time anymore.

Motive for Ivins' suicide

In people's minds, the most damning evidence of Ivins' guilt is his suicide. If not guilty, why would he take his life?

But doesn't the pornography claim, if true, would provide a motive? For a quiet, private person, a respected professional and scientist, and a family man, the perspective of having this little dark secret broadcast on the national media, and then regurgitated over and over on talk shows, must have been torturous. Quite possibly too, there could be more secrets in his life -- not related to anthrax, but ruinous for his career and family and community standing. If you dig long enough, you can find skeletons in everyone's closet.
