Also, the fact that -- _years_ ago -- [McCain] advocated for 2 critical things:

    1. Place more restrictions on the activities of lobbyists in Washington.

    2. Force all candidates for public office to rely exclusively on public funds for their campaigns.

The only way this country can achieve _real_ political change is by removing money from the political equation. _That_ is change you can believe in. Everything else is just talk.

I completely and wholeheartedly agree. That's one of the main reasons I support Obama. According to the latest financial disclosures, 94% of Obama's contributions last month were from people giving $200 or less. Only 13% of John McCain's total contributors gave $200 or less, and 70% of his contributions have been in the amount of $1000 or more. Obama has refused to accept any contributions from lobbyists or PACs, while Mr. Straight Talk has been taking them with a rictus grin on his face. It seems to me like the person who's going to have more luck restricting the activities of lobbyists in Washington is probably going to be someone who hasn't taken a dime from them.

McCain might have advocated for those two things "years ago," but he's certainly changed his tune since then. He's gone from the "Straight Talk Express" to the "Just Talk Express."

On the front page of Salon, the abbreviated headline for this article is the extremely optimistic:

    "NYT's Nagourney: 'Clinton could win'"

Click on the link, and you're taken to the War Room, where the headline is a slightly less exuberant:

"Nagourney: 'At least one scenario where Clinton could win'"

Click on the actual article link, though, and you're taken to a real downer of an article entitled:

"Obama poll collapse may be Clinton's best hope"

I said it's not fair to the entire party to drag that church with him in to the general.

Actually, let's do it. And then let's drag all of the right-wing pastors and preachers who have endorsed McCain into the general. Let's cherry-pick the absolute worst of their sermons and public statements and play them in a repeating loop on all of the 24-hour news shows. Let's demonize every one of these bastards.

And then maybe some of these jerk-offs will think twice about the hate that they spew from the pulpit, and maybe some Americans will start to think twice about requiring their candidates to believe in an invisible dad who lives in the clouds.

  • On the bright side...

I'm mellow about this stuff. I had dinner with my brother the other night. He's not political at all. He dislikes Hillary immensely. He thinks the republicans are turds. He just follows the news and comments. He thinks Obama is the front man for the black radicals. I have no idea what percentage of the population he represents.

    Yeah, but I bet he doesn't think he's a Muslim anymore. :)

  • It's actually spelled "electability"

How would a presidential candidate Obama defend himself against Republican criticism?

"Bill Clinton is a racist" and "Bill Clinton had an affair" won't work then.

"John McCain says he wants to clean up Washington, but 70% of his campaign contributions have come from donors, PACs, and lobbyists giving $1000 or more."

"John McCain says he has a firm grasp of the realities of the Middle East but didn't know that Iran isn't training or equipping al-Qaeda."

"John McCain claims he misspoke when talking about Iran and al-Qaeda. Was it a slip of the tongue, or does he have memory problems?"

"John McCain once stood up to 'agents of intolerance' who blamed 9/11 on feminists, gays, and the ACLU. Now he embraces them."

"John McCain voted against George Bush's tax cuts for the wealthy before he voted for them."

Do I need to continue? Obama's got his weak points to be sure, but it's not like McCain's invincible either. He just hasn't been attacked yet, because the Dems don't have a nominee yet. Once the general election campaign gets rolling, we'll see just how electable McCain is, without an energized base and with the burden of eight years of epic Republican failures hanging around his neck.

Read it and weep. If the superdelegates do their jobs, Hillary Clinton will be the Democratic nominee:

    http://www.electoral-vote.com/

And two weeks ago, it was showing that Obama would beat McCain in the general. And two weeks before that, it was showing that Hillary or Obama would beat McCain in the general.

The election's not for another 32 weeks, dear. There's going to be a lot more back-and-forth on this. Let's see how Obama does when he's only running against one opponent, hmm?

"Crafty Barack?" Really? That's the best you can do? That's probably the lamest attempt at a derogatory nickname I've ever seen.

Here's a few hints: Rhyming ones usually work pretty well, like "Tricky Dick" or "Shrill Hil." A bit of assonance can help as well, as in "Slick Willie." And sometimes a great one just falls in your lap. I think Molly Ivins' nickname for Dubya, "Shrub," is probably the best political nickname that can be used in polite company.

Anyway, hope this helps. Now get back in there and go get 'em, slugger!

I'm ashamed to admit that I'm a legit Obama supporter who does get carried away. But I'll be back on my meds soon, I promise.

  • Bad week for Hillary

Wow. This has been a terrible week for Hillary. First the sniper fire story, then the record-high negatives, then Obama opening up a huge lead in the Gallup, and now a major Obama endorsement in her must-win state. Oh, and her husband keeps putting his foot in his mouth, and her campaign is nearly broke.

Why is she still doing this again?

No matter how many times I hear that punchline, WES, the joke never gets old.
