-@heru-ur

Have you ever made a study of slavery? Slaves have the habit of running away if there is no strong, alert government to punish them for that action.

You've decided what I wrote about Pualism leading to feudalism is equal to American slavery. It isn't. Whenever American slaves escaped slavery (or when it was ended), they escaped into a world of choices unavailable to them so long as they remained slaves. They were kept slaves by virtue of the lash and the legislature. The serfs had no place to escape because there wasn't anything different anywhere else for them. It was feudals and serfs for as far as the eye could see! The Lords, i.e, the government, didn't keep them down by way of the courthouse and the whip, they kept them down by way of the "bank" and the Church. While that is certainly a form of slavery, it is more akin to being a wage slave, than an actual slave. You want to argue against an argument I didn't make.

Another toss away line? You have not heard that the constitution has been amended? Ron Paul advocates following the constitution as we have today to the letter. Hence, you are saying that you think the people of the USA would amend the constitution to reimpose slavery?

This is the core issue I have with Paulism, its fundamentalist, evangelical nature. |Follow the Constitution to the letter? According to whom? You and Scalia? The Supreme Court was created by the Constitution, which has no consequence without the institutions charged with its interpretation and enforcement. People and courts have argued and debated what’s in the Constitution since it was written. In one era it means one thing and then new information or new developments come along and suddenly it means something else, sometimes just the opposite of what it meant in an earlier era. The Constitution is a living, evolving document not chiseled in stone from Mt. Sinai. Since when has there ever been universal agreement about every vague nuance of the Constitution? I’m put off by the Paulists absolutism.

God help us!

I can't even watch the rest of this it's so horrible. Pathetic! Get this person off the stage! John McCain and the Republicans should be arrested for what they've done. This is so painful I almost feel sorry for her. It's obvious she's in way, way over her head.

Too much, too soon, too late

I still haven't forgiven Stone for that god awful history mangling, homophobic portrait he drew of Alexander where he presented Greek warriors as drag queens. I'm in no mood to suffer through two more hours of Stonework, especially about GWB. This is one instance where I could give a rat's ass about how nuanced and perfectly pitched are the actor's performances, all of which is no doubt true. It's the subject matter that turns my stomach.

More hustle

This article makes my head hurt and I haven't gotten off the first page yet! Salon has substituted the bloviating of the Op-Ed pages, pundits and political strategists with the bloviating of the markerters and advertisers who fuel the pundits and strategists in their bloviating.

@GlennNYC - ENDA

I agree. I believe it's a failure of the national gay rights organizations that this law has not been enacted. If we could only get them to focus on a gay population other than the privileged, coastal, jet-setting, Fire Island, San Francisco, cocktail, influence peddling, Washington D.C, elitist, gay-world axis (God love 'em), we might have a chance of getting this thing passed. I've believed for a long time that they need to come to TN or OK and find some evangelical, Bible-thumping, Jesus lovin' gay man or woman who has lost their job through homophobic discrimination and make them, and their story, the poster child for ENDA. If you don't understand that these kind of gay people exist, you don't understand American gay people. The woods are full of them!

Discrimination in employment is something that most Americans understand and accept is wrong. It's in their DNA. That you can still be fired from your job for being homosexual in the U.S. in at least half the states (I think that's right), says far more about the inability of the national gay rights organizations to frame the issue in the right way using the right symbols and the right people than it does to the level of homophobia among Americans.

This is a winnable issues for gays and lesbians. Marriage rights, important as they are, are going to take a bit longer and even when secured, still won't guarantee your right to making a living.

What can be done?

Does anyone know what the possibility is of the CA Supreme Court ruling the amendment unconstitutional? The Court already gave gays/lesbians marriage rights based on the CA State Constitution. I don't live in CA but I'd like to know what actions are being taken by gay rights attorneys to repeal the amendment. Is it possible? What would it take? This amendment takes rights away...first time in American history that such a thing has occurred. Shocking really.

Love the letter writers!

I didn't even bother reading Paglia's article this time. I skipped right to the letters. The hate mail in response to a Paglia post are far, far more intelligent, insightful and downright entertaining than anything Paglia has written since "Sexual Personae." The letters never fail to make me laugh out loud. They're the best justification for keeping Paglia churning out her goofy "insights" and "observations".

Who is this guy? I never heard of him before today. He makes my head hurt. I hope I never have to hear about him again. I think he's a Big Fat Twit! He isn't funny.
