This campaign has gone on too long. We can't keep ourselves from getting weirder and weirder and from getting further and further away from the truth about why Hillary Clinton inspires so much disdain. And why the more she campaigns, the more she inspires. Her being female has little if anything to do with why most Obama supporters don't trust her. Traister's analysis is hardly sound sociology since it relies on the attitudes that she's encountered in her circle of friends. Friends of a certain age, from a certain background, living and working with a certain set of assumptions and expectations in a certain east coast/west coast locale. Hardly representative of anyone outside any of those parameters.
Hillary Clinton voted to authorize George W. Bush's use of military force in Iraq. She didn't even bother to read the NIE before voting to send American troops into harm's way.
Hillary Clinton voted for the Kyle-Liberman Act which authorizes George W. Bush to bomb Iran.
Hillary Clinton voted for a bankruptcy bill that makes it harder for poor and working class Americans to file for bankruptcy.
Hillary Clinton has no political courage whatsoever. Where was Hillary Clinton while the Constitution was being undermined and shredded by the Bush Administration? What filibusters did she lead against the Patriot Act, the Military Commissions Act that destroyed habeus corpus, the FISA bill that allows the Bush Administration to monitor your every thought and movement? What political capital has she spent fighting the Bush Administration? At what time and over what issues has she taken on the Republicans politically in a principled and public way when it mattered to the rest of us? She's been harassed and tortured by the Republican noise machine over issues having to do with her personally (Whitewater, Tavelgate, Vince Foster, etc.) but not over anything having to do with the rest of us.
Hillary Clinton is lying. She supported NAFTA when it was being being written into law and she continued to support it right up until 2008 when she was running for the nomination in Ohio.
Hillary Clinton is responsible for me not having health insurance because of the way she went about health care reform during her husbands first term in office. For someone who is supposed to be so smart, she went about it in such a dumb way that it set back the fight for universal healthcare by twenty years. Traister has likely never been without healthcare coverage and she was 10 when Clinton was hold up in the White House basement putting the screws to healthcare reform.
Hillay Clinton takes so much money from PACS and corporate lobbyists that it makes you wonder....did she fail at healthcare reform on purpose?
Hillary Clinton is lying. She didn't get fired on by snipers in Bosnia in 1996. She got kissed and hugged and taken to tea.
The veiled and at times overt racist campaign that she and her husband have run against Obama is despicable. Karl Rove couldn't have done it better.
There are nine good reasons not to vote for Hillary Clinton that I can think of off the top of my head this morning even before I've had my coffee. None of them have to do with her being a female. PLEASE STOP! Yes, I'm shouting, PLEASE STOP!
I began to notice several months ago, the more Obama gained in popularity, in stature, in the possibility of winning the nomination, the more these code words that his political enemies have unleashed on him, his detractors in the media use to describe him, the louder the chorus has become. They've tried to tar and feather him with words like "arrogant", "cocky", the new one is "elitist". These are all code words for "uppity Negro." Plain old American racism. Because those in the media view him through the filter of their own unconscious, race-tinged biases (how could they not?), they confuse intelligence, self-confidence and coolness under fire with "arrogance" and "elitism." His political enemies are counting on these incredibly subtle racist memes to resonate within the psyches of the American voter. They probably aren't wrong.
I killed my TV 10 years ago. Full of the most inane, pointless garbage the human brain can invent. I took to calling it the Stupid Box because the more you watch it the stupider you become. It flattens everything to its two dimensional universe and makes all activity and desire, both human and in the natural world, equal in importance, which is false.
I'll add that while I have occasionally seen recordings of South Park, and loved it, I have also been left wondering a bit about the politic agenda of its creators. Libertarian?
Stop reporting on the reporters and trying to claim innocence from bias. Please start using the term "we" and "I" rather than "they" when speaking about pundits.... Bandito
I think the word you're looking for is "narcissists". The press in this country is so taken with their own celebrity that they go on and on about themselves, ad nauseaum, "they (meaning 'we') believe this or that...blah, blah, blah." They're full of assertions, baseless, unsupportable assertions, about what it is that "most people" or "most Americans" think or believe or do. What they mean is that whatever it is their describing, that's what most of the people THEY know think or say or do. In other words other pundits and other so-called 'journalists', or just their friends and families. It's the most self-referential, narcissistic pile of baloney imaginable. Salon.com is not immune.
Journalism is not a profession. It's not a profession in the same way that medicine or the law or teaching are professions. There is no standards tests one must pass, no minimum proficiency standards one has to meet to get a license to practice journalism. Anyone can be a journalist.
