  • The Persecuted

What Griffin did was mock the beliefs of a nearly all-powerful majority (99% of our political leaders are devout Christians), and that to me is fine. Critiquing the powerful isn't just a right, it's nearly a responsibility. It's interesting that Donahue's stance is the opposite: it is BECAUSE most Americans are Christian that Christianity shouldn't be mocked (classic authoritarian stance). So presumably, then, he would support the converse: only minority groups should be demeaned/mocked. - The Professor

Thank you Professor for pointing out the near universal power in the U.S. of Christian believers. It's somewhat humorous to hear the religio-fascists like Donahue (and a hundred more on the religious right) whine and bloviate and scream and huff and puff about the persecution of Christians and the assault on Christianity when the Christians own most of the land, own most of the private wealth, control most of the public monies, control every state legislature, posses most of the governorships, have a majority on the Supreme Court, make up overwhelming majorities in the U.S. Congress and control the entire executive branch, including the highest offices in the land. The poor put upon Christians, it's so difficult for them to be heard in this country. The Christians are ultimately responsible for the Iraq War, either because they instigated it, called for it or did little or nothing to stop it. After all the death and misery, they still aren't going to stop it. They are in love with death no less than any Islamofascist terrorist. They have proven themselves again to be people who do not live by the very creeds they profess. The Christians are covered in the blood of the innocent, both their own children and the untold thousands of Iraqis and their children. And still they insist the rest of us treat them with deference? Why? Because they're the majority? Their failures of faith and obedience to their professed teachings stinks to the heavens. As a gay man, my beliefs, values, and even self-worth are assaulted, assailed, and my very life put in jeopardy, on a daily basis in this predominantly Christian country, by the government, the press, the churches, all responsible for peddling the most errant and ignorant lies and nonsense about me and my friends, and all overwhelmingly owned and controlled by Christians. I don't need to go looking for more enemies in the Islamic world, where I can easily find them. I have enough religio-fascist ignorance and hate to deal with right here among the Christians.

Whenever the Christians want to start atoning for their appalling behavior, their xenophobia, racism, war mongering, homophobia, both historical and current, and begin to act upon the directions of their avowed spiritual leader, then I might be able to stand still long enough, as Billie Holliday once said, to listen to somebody's damn sermon.

  • When will this long nightmare end?

My heart was broken when I read this. Whenever I thought of it all day today, I broke into tears of sadness and grief and brotherhood for these beautiful men and their families. What a terrible waste of life. I also cried from anger.

Which article by Garret Keizer? What month did it appear? I did a search on their web pages and nothing with Garret Keizer and/or General Strike Nov. 6 shows up. Wanna share a bit more information?

So it's okay for the Canadians to hear such occasional cursing as "goddamn" on their tellies, along with whatever political speech may be a part of it, but not here in the good ole U.S.S.A. Not here in freedom's land and liberty's homestead. That's because Canada is a grown up country full of grown ups and we are not a grown up country. No, we are not a grown up country at all. And we are certainly, less and less, every day a free country or one that practices and upholds the rights of free speech. More and more, every day, we're a goddamned fucked up country.

  • They will loose in 2008

I'm a life long Democrat. I've never voted for a Republican for anything. I would like to see the Democratic Party dissolved. I have grown to despise the Democratic Party and its leaders over the past six years. One of the ways I will do my part to see that the Democratic Party is destroyed is for the first time in my life, I'm going to vote Republican. I don't care who the nominee is. It simply doesn't matter. Obviously a vote for a Democrat is a vote for a wannabe Republican, so why bother? At least with another eight years of Republican rule the country and the world will be such a total mess that perhaps there will finally be another Revolution and the political caste of the nation will be cleansed, Democrat and Republican alike along with all their consultants, and the Republic will be restored.

  • I have a dream

How do we dismantle the Democratic Party?...oh, wait, never mind, they're doing a perfect job of that all by themselves. They will loose big in 2008. I've never voted for a Republican in all the years I've voted. I'm going to vote Republican in the next election. I want to vote for a real Republican and not one of those closet Republicans who call themselves Democrat. I think Congress should be returned to the Republicans and so should the White House. In that way, after eight more years of this outpouring of psychosis, the country and the world will be a total wreck. Perhaps then the people may finally rise up in righteous anger and decapitate our despicable political class, Democrat and Republican alike, and the Republic will be restored. But first the Democratic Party has to be gotten out of the way.
