A previous thread here already discussed the other issue that may change how our various intelligence and law enforcement agencies handle their increased powers.

When the discussion raged about the appropriateness of using military for police like functions, the question was about the deterrence effect of police, and that of the military. The deterrence effect also works upon those who would exceed their legal and constitutional authority in stopping terrorism and other crimes. Point blank--if you work in a business or agency and are encouraged (or at the very least not discouraged) from stepping over the line in your pursuit of criminals/terrorists/enemies, it becomes very difficult to observe the law. Especially when the chance of punishment or censure is noticeably reduced or relaxed, as it very much appears to be in this administration.

That was posited as the underlying reason that Abu Grahib went so wrong. Not to say that our various agencies have always acted at their best, but when they are being encouraged to be their worst, and given to understand that there will be little or no consequences (as you brought forward in your snip from the desired FISA statute)...

These guys are starting to remind me of investment commercials, with the low toned voice over: "Past results are likely indicative of future predictions. This war has been the first war in our nation's history that has been 100% economically driven, including most aspects of reporting by the mainstream media.

You may be forgetting about our invasions of Guatemala (for United Fruit) and Hawaii (for the Doles), to give two examples, as well as our well-planned coups to overthrow governements hostile to our corporate sponsors (Chile comes to mind). The US has been intervening militarily and clandestinely on behalf of our national (i.e., corporate) interests for over a century now, and is still going strong.

Were these well armed and armored strolls, or on the ground, among the people visits without company level military escort? It's amazing how much nicer people are to you when you have overwhelming firepower.

“He’s reinvigorated his weapons programs ... biological, chemical and nuclear programs ... he continues to redefine delivery systems to develop longer-range missiles that will threaten the United States and our allies.” Letter to President Bush from Sen. Bob Graham, D-Fla., and others, 12-5-01

“Saddam is a tyrant and a threat to the peace and stability of the region. He’s ... building weapons of mass destruction and the means of delivering them.” Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich., 9-12-02

“He’s stored secret supplies of biological and chemical weapons throughout his country.” Al Gore, 9-23-02

“We have known for many years that Saddam Hussein is seeking and developing weapons of mass destruction.” Sen. Ted Kennedy, D-Mass., 9-27-02

“I’ll be voting to give the president of the United States the authority to use force ... to disarm Saddam. ... I believe that a deadly arsenal of weapons of mass destruction in his hands is a real and grave threat to our security.” Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., 10-9-02

“Hussein’s worked to rebuild his chemical and biological weapons stock, his missile delivery capability and his nuclear program. He’s given aid, comfort and sanctuary to terrorists, including al-Qaeda members.” Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-N.Y., 10-10-02

And this was after they were provided intelligence by who?

And these people have mostly stated that we were misled on the intelligence, and have admitted their errors.

    Unlike you.

    PartyofDog:

Why not let them drive the military into the ground? If the military is there to protect our Constitutional rights I think this--destruction of the military machine as we know it--may be the only hope we have left. Containment is the key. Keep them contained in Iraq--until they break.

Then we can turn to Blackwater for our domestic and foreign security. Paid military contractors (mercenaries) already outnumber our ground troops in the Iraq theatre, and I believe someone would "regretfully" have to draw them back here to take care of domestic security once our citizen army falls apart.

I truly fear outsourcing our national security to hired mercenaries. The historical record on that move is particularly abysmal.

What is the Council on American Islamic Relations planning?

Something along the lines of supporting this:

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

"If it is up to me, we are going to explain that an attack on this homeland of that nature would be followed by an attack on the holy sites in Mecca and Medina," the GOP presidential candidate [Tancredo] said. "That is the only thing I can think of that might deter somebody from doing what they would otherwise do. If I am wrong fine, tell me, and I would be happy to do something else. But you had better find a deterrent or you will find an attack. There is no other way around it. There have to be negative consequences for the actions they take. That's the most negative I can think of."

    Jim Montague,

However, if this was the method nationwide, would that be a more acceptable change? The only states where this would not change the outcome would be those with one House seat--how does that play out? Hell, we might even get a third party candidate with electoral votes!
