I've been waiting and watching before submitting my opinion on Broadsheet, but this entry broke me. What does this news have to do with women? Oh, right. NOTHING. It's very specifically not even about women, but about young men. The author had to put in a lame reference to shoe lust (obnoxious stereotypes, anyone?) to even pretend there was any relation.
Ghettoizing women's issues is bad enough. Pretending any trivial "news" about sexuality is a women's issue? Give us a break, Salon.
So, if these really big guys weren't in the NFL anymore, would they just stop existing? Would their size no longer contribute to early deaths? Or would they die young anyway, but not get to play football beforehand?
Who would that help, except possibly the reputation of the NFL?
Just curious. Maybe I'm missing something.
I find it interesting that no one (up to page six of the letters, anyway), mentioned this comment of LW's:
"he has since refused to talk to me unless I first sincerely apologize to him."
In other words, not only did she refuse to give her friend shelter, she is so unashamed of her behavior that she can't even summon up a sincere "sorry I left you out in the cold" and won't try to. To me, that's the most revealing part of the letter. She's not looking for advice; she's looking for confirmation that there was nothing wrong with her choice.
If I were the unfortunate friend, I probably wouldn't end the friendship over the incident alone. But incident plus refusal to apologize? You bet. This woman is, simply, a bad friend.
So... these women who are expressing themselves as strong people, athletic people, with a right to experience their bodies as strong and fun, should have two choices: wear the old hajibs that make sports very difficult, or jump straight into t-shirts and cutoffs?
Why must it be all or nothing? You don't have to fall in love with Nike, but this is a good step for these women.
Of course, I also think that cleaner, less painful clitoral circumcision would be an improvement over unnecessarily filthy conditions for a filthy, horrid act. How could you argue otherwise, honestly? If it's going to happen anyway -- and no one's managed to stop it yet -- it should be as clean as possible. And if these volleyball players are going to stay covered from head to toe anyway -- which apparently they are -- how is it bad to make it easier for them to make the revolutionary statement they ARE ready to make??
and he does it all in subtitles, which seems wildly subversive, somehow, for network TV
Well, it might, if Lost hadn't done it first.
And, to my mind, the reliance on the Meredith/McDreamy storyline is the weakest thing about "Grey's." Both characters are insufferable; together, they're almost unbearable.
Could someone explain to me what's so "odd" about the word "joyful"?
Ah, yet more wordplay from the supporters of the war. If ol' Joe had said they weren't optimistic, that would sound bad. But make optimism sound childish and feminine, and of course those badass soldiers wouldn't be like that! Who wants to be "Pollyannaish"?
"Reorganizing our culture department" doesn't say a thing. It sounds to me like nothing more than a bone to throw hoping the dogs will stay quiet until the forget what they were barking about.
I too love Audiofile (though I miss Thomas Bartlett). There better be some substance -- and, call me greedy, but some free downloads -- to whatever your new music offering is.
And I'm glad to know I'm not the only person who used to love Video Dog and is dismayed to see nothing of interest on there anymore. What's the deal?
