Original article: Winners and losers

Stewart, Dean and Ron Paul Winners ....

Add my voice to those who feel John Stewart and Howard Dean deserve prominent places on the winners list.

I'd also say Ron Paul deserves to be on the Winners list rather than a loser. Two years ago he was a virtual unknown on the national stage. His message does resonate with a segment of the electorate and frankly he was one of the best people to watch at the republican dedates. Not to mention of the only anti-war republican running. He was never expected to win. But he did make a mark. Which means he accomplished what he set out to do. That's a win in my book.

He'll be around for a while.

Let the Republicans Have Him

The only reason to keep him around would be to get the 60 seats. And even then I would say better to have 59 real Democrats than be forced to give anything to Lieberman.

Now that's all but certain the Democrats will fall short of the 60 seat majority kick Lieberman to the curb. Leave him out the cold.

It's one thing to endorse the other party's guy. Even to appear with them occassionally. But Lieberman spoke at the Republican national convention. Embraced McCains policies, not only on national security, but on domestic issues as well. He was full willing participant in the character assination of Obama and painting any person who disagreed with McCain/Bush on foreign policy as a non-American.

He's gone.

And if Reid lets Lieberman back into the fold after what he's done that simply reinforces my long held view that Reid has no business running the Senate.

John McCain Picked Palin ...

What ever her failings. However unqualified she may have been. However ignorant of the world she may have been.

John McCain made the decision to put her a heartbeat away from the Presidency. All these stories coming out about her now just prove how bad McCain's judgement truly is. How messed up his decision making abilities are.

If Palin cost McCain votes, its because MCCAIN put her on the ticket. He did it on a whim. My guess is without consulting the majority of his own staff. They were caught just a flatted footed as the rest of the country. Think about how close we came to having that kind of decision making termperment in the White House.

Democrats Hold Only Tentative ....

The Hispanic vote is by no means a lock for Democrats. Much of the Hispanic community is Catholic and culturally conservative. That leaves them vulnerable to the same wedge issue, hot button culture issues (gay marriage, abortion etc) that the republicans have used successfully to peel away working class voters whose economic interests lie with Democrats. They also tend to be suspicious of government action (having come from countries with disfunctional governments) and are therefore receptive to the libertarian message of 'small government' from the republicans.

The Democrats (and especially Obama) should send former California governor Pete Wilson a BIG thank you card for making immigrant bashing the centerpiece of his administation during the 90s. He alienated an entire generation of Hispanic voters. And his short term success led many other republicans around the country to duplicate his strategies.

If republicans ever get over their knee-jerk 'close the border' mentallity they could take a sizable chunk of the Hispanic vote away from democrats the same way they've taken away the working class vote. Another culture war combined with small government rhetoric.

Original article: Secretary of State Clinton?

Senate Majority Leader

I'd much rather have Clinton take over Reid's job in the Senate. If she can't do it, perhaps the Democrates can find someone else with a backbone.

Need to Get More Donors

There is a chronic sortage of both blood and organs around the world. Thousands of people die everyday who have perfectly good organs that could save lives and are not organ donors or whose families refuse to let their organs be used. As a result thousands of others die.

If this ad gets even one person to become an organ donor thats a good in my book. The ad is clearly targeted to young males, who are statistically more likely to die in accidents and who have healthier organs.

If you are not listed as an organ donor, please take the time to become one.

You can save a life.

Clinton Should Stay in the Senate ....

Where she can focus on health care and other domestic issues. She is a class-A policy wonk (I mean that in a good way). She knows those issues inside and out and as I've said before, I think she would make a great majority leader. I also believe she would be an excellent partner to Obama in the Senate taking the lead on getting his domestic policies enacted.

Besides I don't want the Obama adminstration to poach too many dems from congress. The Democrats need experience people in congress to get good domestic legislation passed.

Contingent on Replacing Current Management

If a bailout occurs than any money given to the automakers should be contingent on replacing the existing top management (no gold parachutes).

The problems of the American Auto industry have been apparent for nearly 30 years. Lack of design innovation, perceived poor quality (I acknowledge significant improvement in this area over the last 15 or so years, but the perception of poor quality persists), short term fanacial decision making in place of long term investments etc etc. The fact that none of these issues has been effectively addressed by any of the big three should be ample proof that their current managment and boards should all be out of a job.
