Thanks Glenn. You are doing a great service to the US with this blog. You have to take the beast down bit by bit, and you're helping out.

  • The American people are at fault

[Read the article: The administration's FISA falsehoods continue unabated]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

    Glenn,

The bottom line here is that, without broad popular outrage, these program can and will continue. The American people get the leaders they (we) deserve and by not holding their feet to the fire they will continue to violate the rule of law as they see fit. Which is to say, whenever they feel like it.

The system is broken because Americans have become fat and lazy. Eternal vigilance has morphed into worshipping American Idolatry, the rule of law is now subservient to the will of Bush, and frankly Americans only have themselves (ourselves) to blame.

  • Good to see you back Glenn

And none too soon. As always, and insightful and well-written article. It never ceases to amaze me that you can put out so many lengthy analyses on a daily basis. Great job.

  • Egypt Steve is a Concern Troll

[Read the article: Col. Boylan's denial]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

    Glenn,

Egypt Steve's "comments" suggest that he is a concern troll, trying to get you to talk about something, anything, else than this topic. Like you I am not very sophisticated in IP addresses etc., but is there a way for you to check where his comments are coming from? I'd bet dollars to donuts it is a GOP operative or right-wing blogger or Fox News employee. In fact, I would not be surprised if it came from Boylan himself, one of his staff or even the White House. I am not a conspiracy theorist, but these people literally know no shame, have no limits and really do not feel they will feel any personal responsibility for their actions, so such a move would not surprise me at all.

Additionally, "take on the big boys" does not seem like a typical Unclaimed Territory reader's comments. Any regular UT reader knows you don't "take on the big boys" but rather call out hypocrites and sycophants of any political persuasion (or gender) who make hypocritical and sycophantic statements.

This guys smells like a troll, warts and all.

... Glenn does not understand what a Very Serious News Story is.

Rudy Giuliani's horrifying extremist agenda and Messianic world view? YAAAWN.

A white trash woman acts like white trash? Now this is a Very Serious News Story requiring the Utmost Attention of our Very Serious National Media.

    You're slipping Glenn.

  • Again, Greenwald gets it wrong

[Read the article: The Tom Friedman of 2002 has not gone anywhere]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Come now Glenn, how can you let idiotic notions such as facts, logic, information, "reality" and "historical accuracy" cloud your judgment?

Instead, I say venture forth to Very Dangerous Places (like four-star hotels in Morocco) and derive a comprehensive foreign policy analysis from pithy phrases from cab drivers from said Very Dangerous Places.

In the meantime, STFU, and stop with your Extremist Blogging against the Very Serious Tom Friedman and Oh-So Serious Maureen Dowd.

  • Amazing!

Glenn, did you see Joe Klein's new posting?

    http://www.time-blog.com/swampland/2007/11/dialing_the_republicans.html

His half-hearted "denunciation" of the batshit crazies on the right was true to form. I mean, at best, he scowled in disappointment about the true insanity of the right wing base, saving his real guns and knives for those eeeevil, partisan Democrats in other columns.

But that only half the story: The real fun comes in the comments section. People are really angry at him, and it looks like he's lost lots of credibility, thanks largely to you. Keep up the good work!

  • You missed an important point

[Read the article: John McCain's bid for American Jewish votes]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

    Glenn,

The fact is McCain is not vying for the Jewish vote. He is vying for the Evangelical Christian vote, so many of whom believe that Israel, and a great war in the Middle East involving Israel, is critical to their Biblical worldview.

Additionally, I submit McCain and his ilk are using the "pro-Israel" line as part of a two-pronged strategy. By saying he is "pro-Israel" he is (a) deflecting charges of anti-Semitism while (b) sucking up to the most extremist end-timers.

So the real point here is that McCain is not talking to Jews, but instead John Hagee and his kind, as they truly are his base.

  • Jewish vs. Christian votes

[Read the article: John McCain's bid for American Jewish votes]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I appreciate Paul in KY's comments, but I do not believe McCain has the evangelical vote sewn up. Just because Hagee endorsed him, it does not mean the entire flock of right-wingers will necessarily vote for McCain. That's why he's doing this.

As an American Jew, I have seen this cynical Israel-bating my entire adult life. The right wing consistently uses Israel as a proxy for the return of Jesus. They pretend to love us but in fact they despise us -- that is, of course, until we are "saved" and therefore "completed." Jews feel like they are being paid attention to, but in reality the audience is the end-timers who, as you correctly point out, McCain needs.

Jews have little power in this country compared to the right wing Christians. We don't control "the media" and, while a majority of Jews do control Hollywood since they, well, started Hollywood 100 years ago, they do not act in unison with a single Borg-like mindset. The Christian right has, and will always have, an incredible amount of power in this country, dwarfing all other ethnic groups.
