  • Terrible

[Read the article: Superstar rules help the Lakers]

That was such a blatant foul. Kobe's hand didn't get anywhere near the ball. The only thing he touched was Paul Pierce's side, and the impact made him lose control of the ball. The announcers didn't even mention it. They just talked about how clutch Kobe was in that instant. It was kind of embarrassing. It was one of the first clips on Sportscenter. I watched it again today. It was so obvious.

The thing that sucks about the NBA is now that its headed back to Boston, we all know and expect the calls to go in Boston's favor once more, and for calls like that to be called against Kobe 100 times out of 100. Because it's in Boston.

  • Yea, Davis, no surprise

[Read the article: Lanny Davis joins Fox News]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I also remember Glenn Greenwald mocking this guy a while back, talking about a "Lanny Davis exception" to the Constitution. This was, I believe, in reference to the fact that Lanny Davis was part of some hand-picked "board" that Bush convened to "look" at illegal wiretapping and give it their approval. Of course, Davis did so. He's a tool and a stooge, and anyone could've seen this coming from a mile away. I wonder how long it will be before he calls the Democratic nominee "Osama".

  • So, from what I understand

[Read the article: The ultimate underdog pile]

This win is like a #13 or #14 seed in the NCAA Tournament winning it all. Of course, things aren't always this tidy but that is pretty awesome and much congratulations to Fresno State. I always wondered why the CWS doesn't get more play than it does - maybe its because most of the dominant teams are out west, and, you know, I have heard there is a bias....

  • Sacred

[Read the article: Supreme Court gun ruling could backfire]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

McCain calling gun ownership rights "sacred" made my skin crawl. It's such a disgusting way to use that word.

That said, all Obama has to do is say he respects the decision by the Supreme Court because he respects the Supreme Court as an institution and the ableness of its justices. This would set him apart from McCain, whose ranting after the Boumediene ruling was undignified and pandering. I think that would be the end of the gun debate, I really do.

  • Yes

[Read the article: A game with soothing graphics, gal pals]

When you are confronted by the ridiculous number of snotty, racist, homophobe 12 year olds on Xbox Live, you'll want that goodwill ambassador. It's enough to make one fear for the future.

And overall I think the game companies have done an awesome job of getting more women on board. Now, I am a guy but my girlfriend bought a Wii (with no encouragement or whatever from me). She's pretty darn good at Mario Kart. And I am pretty sure a significant chunk of Nintendo's handheld (DS) business is women nowadays, and AFAIK Nintendo does not do stereotypical marketing or labeling with their games. Though they have put ads featuring Carrie Underwood and Liv Tyler on TV recently. They are designing games to appeal to more people, which seems to have attracted more people than featuring spas and shopping or whatever.

  • @w.achton

[Read the article: Anti-science conservatives must be stopped]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I guess the 31,000 scientists (including 9,000 PhDs) who signed a petition rejecting the notion of man-made global warming must be "anti-science" scientists. Check it out:

Okay, I read that. They name two scientists, one is a physicist and one is a doctor of medicine. While I will not dare question their expertise in physics and medicine, I will say that they may not be qualified to speak out on climate change and other environmental issues.

That petition is a flawed appeal-to-authority argument that is designed to fool people with that gaudy PhD number. A PhD isn't an expert in everything.

  • @Elephantman

[Read the article: McCain suggests longer gas tax holiday]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

"And even if we consumers bounce the price back up with increased driving habits and oil consumption (thereby nullifying the price reduction equal to the tax component), won't we have gotten the benefit of lower prices in the meantime? After all, we got more gas to burn in the meantime."

That "benefit" is the same quick fix BS that has gotten us into so many financial messes today.

See, the gas tax is used to pay for road maintenance and construction. Take it away and what happens? Well, the government will then have to issue more debt to pay for those things, and, despite what Republicans have been telling us this decade, those deficits WILL NOT GO AWAY AND WILL HAVE TO BE PAID OFF EVENTUALLY. They will be paid in the form of higher taxes and/or less services for future generations and/or an older Elephantman.

Make no mistake, this is public-to-private thievery. If you're fine with that, whatever, what can I say, but at least recognize it for what it is.

For one thing, you could look at a picture of him later in life, his teeth blackened and rotted. For another, you could also have read any number of things on him, including the recent biography Mao: The Unknown Story (which I did). It's actually fairly common knowledge.

James T. Kirk's letter is disturbing. He is essentially trying to paint anyone who does not like the way our country's finances work nowadays as a radical violent Communist. I realize that is the point, just as how many right wingers like to paint anyone who gets involved in the Obama campaign as a fascist riding a Hitler-like wave, but seriously now. Just because our country is "capitalist" does not mean it has to be this way.
