  • drink safe? not so much

[Read the article: A protective cover for your cocktail]

Like lionheart, I went to their site and couldn't buy one but I did read through their disclaimers. They claim to detect GHB and ketamine (but not rohypnol) and only "in realistic concentrations believed by experts to render a victim incapacitated when digested."

And elsewhere they say, in ALL CAPS which I'll spare y'all:

Not to be used with wine products, beverages containing milk products or cream, oily liqueurs, tonic waters, fruit juices or beverages containing fruit juices.

Great idea but fairly useless implementation.

  • gay, straight, ambiguous, it doesn't matter

[Read the article: Do you have to be gay to tell another guy his eyes are pretty?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

The cornerstone of this letter is that this guy is a co-worker. You do not, not, not want to be in any kind of sexual/romantic relationship with anyone in your office. That way madness lies.

Because of this structural impediment to a relationship, I think the LW can use this as a chance to get out of his own head a little, enjoy the ambiguity and the friendship and live a little in the gray area.

Seriously, even if Mr. Ambiguous resolves his issue and proclaims his unequivocal attraction to you, LW, you need not to get involved while you work for the same company, let alone one cube over.

  • Groklaw

[Read the article: Who owns Linux? Not SCO]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I'm a big fan of Groklaw and was one of the editors at Sys-Con who quit in 2005 over the O'Gara v PJ mess (http://www.freesoftwaremagazine.com/articles/kircaali_interview). And while Groklaw is, as you say, indispensable, it can hardly be considered a neutral observer, given PJ's hardcore backing of Linux over SCO in these cases. Just an observation.

  • yahoo's spam filter stopped working

[Read the article: Yahoo beefs up e-mail. Should you ditch Gmail?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Some months back, Yahoo's spam filter stopped working, dumping tons of spam into my inbox. It got so bad that I (finally) abandoned Yahoo completely.

  • root causes

[Read the article: I don't want to be a doctor!]

Unfortunately, Cary's plan will only work if you choose law or something equally palatable to your parents. And that, my friend, does not solve your problem.

What if you hate the law? What if civil procedure is as soul-sucking to you as was organic chemistry?

Your parents need to face the fact that you are a grown-up now and must make your own decisions and your own way. Before that can happen, however, you must face that same fact yourself. It's a tough thing. You sound like you were always a "good" and "easy" child growing up, always living your life in a way that pleased your parents, even if it was good for you. But you must live for you, not them, you must accept that your choices might not please them and that's okay. You all love each other, right? They sound supportive and they want the best for you. When you can live your life well and on your terms, they'll learn that you are the best judge of what is best for you.

Accept that first (going to health services to get some help for your anxiety attacks will go a long way there) and then, from your calmer, clearer place, you can start to figure out what you want to do with your life.

Cary's right about one thing, though. The Peace Corps is a fine way to start any life.

  • this is okay ...

[Read the article: Bush on 9/11: The emergency continues]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

... but a draft enslaves citizens?

  • Why?

[Read the article: Where were you really, Rudy?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Because (a) he has always been a lying sack and (b) most people hearing this lie won't know, care or put together the fact that his political aspirations were public before he joined and quit.

  • That Anyone Should Have To Say This To Cary Tennis...

[Read the article: I'm addicted to Harry Potter fan fiction!]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Addiction is not about the substance you're shoving in your veins, down your gullet, in your lungs or your brain. It's your relationship to that substance, it's about being in thrall to that external thing.

Yes, on some level it's cute and amusing the LW's substance is HP fan fic, but on any meaningful level, it's irrelevant. She has no control over this and that alone is the problem. She may not end up covered in her own vomit but the addiction can (and will, they always do) still interfere with her relationships.

Is that somehow okay, Cary, because Ron and Hermione really are meant to be together?

  • a quibble

[Read the article: Who would Antonin Scalia torture?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Berlow calls one of the plaintiffs "the murderer of a man and his wife [emphasis added]"

I'm guessing Salon's style guide would suggest "a husband and wife" or "a married couple" as better phrases.

  • it's in how you ask

[Read the article: Sexualizing girls for a good cause]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I don't know the answer but I think it's worth turning the question on its head: Should we bury images that effectively serve one demographic because they are appalling to another?

  • tired of the "condoms kill sensation" nonsense

[Read the article: Planned Parenthood's condoms for women]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

If condom sex felt so different from bareback sex, we would know instantly when a condom falls off. But nobody ever knows that until after the act. Can't be much difference, then.
