The whole point of the first date...
[Read the article: If the first date isn't great, why go out with him again? ]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]...is to figure out whether or not you'll want a second. True, a lot of people aren't great on first dates. They're nervous, preoccupied with making a good impression, scanning you for warning signs, trying not to spill any drinks or food, etc. But even in this scenario, they are who they are.
Think about everyone you know in your life, and think about the first time you met them. How many of them did you more or less peg from the first meeting, and how many were you completely (or mostly) wrong about? I find that I'm right about my first impressions much more often than not, and from your letter it sounds like you are too. So why waste your (and other people's) time by prolonging the courtship with someone you're not into?
I don't think there's anything wrong with the way you're going about things. It's your life; be picky.

If I had to guess...
[Read the article: Wait! Don't buy an iPhone for the holidays!]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I'd say that Jobs will announce two new iPhones in January: the rumored scaled-down "iPhone Nano," which will come out in the earlier part of the year; and a more robust standard iPhone, to be released in the later part of the year, with a 16 gig option.
Many companies will be trying (and are trying already) to get their "iPhone killer" out in the early part of the year, so Jobs will at least want the news out there of a better iPhone, even if it's not hitting the street until, say, September. A cheaper, smaller iPhone will also reel in new (and younger) customers and keep Apple's brand flying high in the cellular world.
But it's also possible that this timeline could be sped up, maybe significantly. I certainly have no trouble believing that Apple had a 3G iPhone ready to go from the beginning but just wanted to see how many people they could double-dip by offering a lesser model to start.

I'd like to know...
[Read the article: Heigl didn't love "Knocked Up"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]...how Heigl reconciles her views on "Knocked Up" with her decision to star in "27 Dresses," a movie about a stunningly beautiful girl who's just not QUITE beautiful enough to ever get married. How many eating disorders will that movie launch, one wonders? But it's okay, Katherine can just diss that one after the fact, too, and move on.

Wow, so basically what this means...
[Read the article: Microsoft kills Vista's anti-piracy kill switch]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]...is that Microsoft is so desperate for Vista users that they don't mind if people pirate it.
Next time, guys, make an operating system that isn't one of the shittiest in history. Do that and you'll find people don't mind paying.

The Democratic side
[Read the article: Romney and Huckabee's religious intolerance ]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]The religious bullshit spewing forth from the mouths of Huckabee and Romney is indeed disturbing. Maybe somewhat less so in Romney's case, since it's become so patently obvious that he's just saying whatever the hell the latest focus group data is directing him to say, but all the same, alarming.
But on the other side of the battle, Clinton and Obama are taking great pains to remind anyone who cares that they, too, believe deeply in the Lord Jesus Christ and are passionately devoted to the Judeo-Christian cause. Which makes you wonder how far we've really come in this country, in terms of tolerance. We can trumpet the fact that the Democratic primary is coming down to a battle between a woman and an African-American all we want; the fact remains that if either one of them declared themselves an agnostic or atheist today, they'd be begging for Mike Gravel's market share by tomorrow. Name any marginalized ethnic or religious group you like and be well assured that you will see one of their kind in the White House long before someone who toes the line on every important social and political issue but admits he or she doesn't believe in God.
What a depressing truth to be aware of. Severe doubt of God and religion has been an important element of intellectual society since long before Jesus of Nazareth walked the earth, and yet the country that professes to be the freest in the world continues to oppress anyone who dares think that way.

The best way to avoid crying...
[Read the article: Kitchen gadgets: Put away those onion goggles, please]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]...is to learn to dice an onion quickly enough so that it doesn't happen. If it takes you 5 minutes to do it, yeah, you're pretty much going to be in a 14-year old girl watching The Notebook-type situation, but if you can dispense with the task in around 30 seconds -- which isn't at all hard to do with a good knife and a little practice -- then you've got nothing to worry about.
