Original article: How would Jesus vote?

What Reform Jews are you talking about?

Fiskhus Jim, when you claim that Evangelicals are like Reform Jews because of their "the message of a jealous and vengeful God and not on the message of love, socialism and political dissent of Jesus," exactly which Reform Jews could you possibly portray like that?

The entire POINT of Reform Judaism has been to move away from a notion of strict, ritualistic obedience to God as the central aspect of Judaism, toward a all-encompassing concern for social justice and political dissent. Look at Reform (and other) Jews' work in the civil rights movement in the 1960s. Look at their role in establishing the Labor Movement in the country -- you know, back when there used to BE a Socialist Party in the U.S. Heck, even that father of Socialism, Karl Marx, was half Jewish.

I'm not sure if you've confused the Reform with the Orthodox (though even this is an uninformed characterization of them), but in any case, I'm not sure that it helps to paint political allies with the brush of one's oppenents.

Like Kerry's "Southern Strategy"

Not surprising from a candidate who said, in response to Howard Dean's 50-state strategy, "You don't need the South to win the presidency."

Technically true, but, you know, good luck with that. John, do you think this might be why you get the rep for being elitist?

Original article: Howard Dean, vindicated

Plenty of vindication to go around

... But for me it has to start with Howard Dean and his supporters (like me). Even now there's still carping about the 50-state stagegy among Dem insiders, but seriously -- Rahm, was it your idea to go after seats in Indiana, of all places?

There can be no greater contrast than with John Kerry, who stated, stupidly, on the record, that "You don't need the South to win the presidency," and as a post in the War Room indicated earlier this week, had the same attitude toward all but a select number of population centers in Ohio. My new Senator, Claire McCaskill made the same mistake in her run for governor in 2004 -- wrote off most of her state. This time she concentrated on the rural areas, picked up tons of votes -- mostly Democrats who didn't vote for her 2 years ago -- and is headed for Washington.

Any candidate who doesn't have the guts or the wisdom to make a good faith effort to explain their vision to anyone but their base (or the incoherent "swing voter") is doomed from the start. Thanks to governor Dean, the Democrats shouldn't have to be in that position for a good while.

Rumsfeldian indeed

Yes, James. "Success = Failure." Now who's being Rumsfeldian?

Let's put it another way. How many more seats did Dean pick than Terry McAuliffe in his WHOLE TENURE as DNC chair? He's someone who certainly would have spent money the way you wanted. How'd that work out?

Here's a suggestion. When Dean's time is up, run for DNC chair, and do what you think is best. Until then, in the face of overwhelming success that you haven't seen in a decade, kindly STFU.

Original article: Mr. President, meet reality

See, he's completely consistent

Remember, Bush famously does not look at opinion polls. Apparently, even when he's talking about the generalized average of what a population's opinion on a given topic is.

Non-citizens, all you need to know is in The Simpsons!

INS Agent, giving Apu the citizenship test: "What caused the Civil War?"

Apu: "Well, the Civil War was caused by many factors, geographical, economic, industrial..."

INS Agent: "Just say 'slavery.'"

Apu: "Slavery it is, sir!"

Original article: Piling on Oprah

I have to wonder too...

...if much of that $40 million was to secure its long-term operation, as in some type of endowed trust. Doesn't do any good to set up the ideal program if it only has funding for the short-term. Real change -- and women in South Africa NEED real change -- takes decades, generations. And easily $40 million.

Face it, losers from around the media, this wasn't an impulse buy, it was a long-term investment. Only Oprah's not the beneficiary, hundreds of South African girls -- and later women -- are.

And really, you're going to complain about a "luxury" like 200-thread count sheets? When was the last time you slept on anything less? They're like $4 a set a WalMart. God forbid those Africans start finding out what kind of quality of life we take for granted here. They may start demanding the global economy serves their needs too.

Original article: Exposé or just innuendo?

One word:

"Whitewater."

More words: Recall that it was a real estate deal of the Clintons' that didn't particularly enrich anyone that put Ken Starr in place as special prosecutor. That "scandal" was started by the NYT during the campaign, long before Clinton assumed the presidency.

Guess the Post just wants to make sure it's set up to be on the cutting edge of a long, expensive, and pointless investigation of a Democratic president's ordinary financial dealings. 'Cause, you know, that's what's really important to investigate a president for.

Good thing GWB or Dick Cheney never enriched themselves through any kind of financial deal -- say, a well-timed sale of stock, or giving the company he used to be CEO of and still draws salary and stock dividens from a no-bid contract to rebuild a country you invaded. Then they'd be in real trouble with the press!
