Yes, that worked so well before!

Remember that time that Dick Gephardt and Tom Daschle encouraged Dems to vote the resolution authorizing force against Iraq, since it would "take the war off the table" and blunt the Republican talking point that Dems were weak on defense?

That turned out well for the party? Right? That worked exactly as planned? Right? Right?

Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

"Mercedes Benz," Janis Joplin (written by Kris Kristoferson).

Though, like "Born in the USA," I'm sure the irony will be missed entirely.

"If you're this corrupt, you are a Republican..."

... no matter what you call yourself," ought to be the line on Jefferson, and Dems should mean it. Boot him and anyone else in the party who so blatantly profits from his or her position in a criminal manner.

It could be the "Sista Souljah" moment of the 2006 elections. But replacing a cynical swipe at black music with integrity.

JJ Abrams for "Indiana Jones 4"?

Did anyone else think this finale was kinda a remake of "Raiders of the Lost Ark" and "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade" together? (Except it's Abrams who says, "I'm just making it up as I go along.")

Of course, it was also a remake of every other episode of Alias, but that's a different rant.

The definition of "is"

Wow! If Colbert IS really an authentic neo-con truth teller, as DeLay would have his supporters believe...

...one can only imagine what he made of the White House Correspondents Dinner.

American Infantilization, con't

I'd also just like to point out that a 6 year old is "such a little girl." 14 year olds are teenagers, routinely babysit (that is, provide "child care") and hold other jobs, and are in or entering high school.

Clearly from Nancy's voice, she wants be talking to a helpless baby that bad things happened to, but that isn't the case now, and it wasn't the case then. She was abducted because she was a biological adult and able to bear children. I know it's on the national agenda to protect teen agers from the nasty world (expecially sex) forever, but it doesn't help matters to take a mature woman who went through an extraordinary trauma and turn her into a child.

What does Fox want us to decide now?

Fake accidents on national news = uncool.

Demonstration of how to steal a bike = both cool and newsworthy.

But wait, there's more!

You missed this choice quote from Lieberman on the party leaders from the NYT article:

“They are not criticizing me for running an independent campaign, they are criticizing Democratic voters for the way they voted.”

Um, how's that, exactly, Joe? If they were rejecting the voters' decision - as YOU are - they would support YOU. You are the only one crying "do over" because you didn't the the results you wanted.

A Civics Lession for Katherine

The prospective Senator may wish to read the Constitution that creates that office, if she's so interested in the job. There she would find, in Article VI, Section III, this prohibition:

"...no religious Test shall ever be required as a Qualification to any Office or public Trust under the United States."

There's far too much nonsense in her statements -- those of them that come closer to forming coherent thoughts, anyway -- to bother addressing them. (I will just note that those other, poor pitiful non-Christian nations "who don't know better" and who we will lead astray already have reproductive rights and protections, many have gay marriage or civil unions, and almost all have a far greater social safety net to take care of the "least among us," as Jesus might say.)

But I think it does bear noting that she is running for an office whose qualifications for holding, as stated in the founding document of the country, she seems blissfully unaware of.

Another Civics Lession for Katherine

Simply put, the basis for U.S. Law is English Common law, which itself derives from the Magna Carta, which explicitly limited the power of the sovereign.

Thus, the system of government and the rights and protections we enjoy as citizens not only do not derive from the 10 Commandments, much about them are at odds with the Commandments.

Case in point, compare the 1st Commandment and the 1st Amendment. One is the establishment of a theocracy, with God as king; the other is philosophical basis for the rejection of both theocracy and the abuse of power associated with monarchy.

As has been noted in these letters, only three of the 10 Commandments are actually legal statutes in the U.S. -- those, not because "God said so," but because as free citizens with rights, we have a vested interest in making murder, theft, and false prosecution as rare as possible.

Oh, well K. I'm sure that when you lose this race, W. will reward your failure, as he does all failure. Hey, how about the Office of Faith Based Initiatives?!

Democratic Office Seekers Take Note

THIS is how you speak truth to power.

THIS is how you make the case against not just your Republican opponent, but the party for which he (and occasionally she -- hello, Ms. Harris!) stands.

THIS is why anyone with enough civic sense to actually vote anymore MUST NOT allow this administration to dictate every action -- and non-action -- of the U.S. Congress, and MUST seek to return its control not just to Democrats, but Democrats who will stand up to this immoral and undemocratic Administration (hello, Ned Lamont!).

Timing is Everything

"It's a day -- after that day, I vowed to the American people that we will do whatever it takes to defend this country from further attack."

Too bad he forgot that he made that vow when he took the oath of office. Then he may have decided the PDB titled "Bin Laden Determined To Attack Inside The U.S." was more than someone "covering their ass."

But nice that he got around to it on Sept. 12.
