S.R. Sidarth

I think that the unsung hero in this victory is S.R. Siddarth. I've never met this man, but I admire him greatly ... for venturing into (formerly) Allen country, for his courage in documenting and coming forward with the infamous video. I have no doubt that Allen will continue to be a racist, albeit quietly and in fact will probably do what Republicans do best (aside from smear tactics) which is to paint himself as a victim of whatever the Gripe Du Jour is.

I live in Northern Virginia and welcome all the different ethnic groups with whom I'm privileged to share the Commonwealth. Hopefully, Allen will fade quietly into the red part of Virginia and stay there, riding his horses and growing some tobacco.

Van Sour Grapes

It sounds like Van Souther's got a major chip on his shoulder. More power to anyone who comes to this country and makes money by hard work, ingenuity and skills. That's one of the things that makes the US a haven for immigrants. And for Southeast Asian Indians who come to this country - why blame them for the caste system in India? I must be one of the lucky Democrats without much money who managed to squirm into the party. Good thing the Republicans are the Part of the People. Yeah. Sounds like maybe you and George Allen could sit on your porch swings talking about the good ol' days when you could insult people and no one even noticed. Cracker.

Van Strikes Again

Poor Van - there you go making assumptions - I'm not French - never have been, although I do love creme brulee. Maybe you have a problem with that. And for the record, my name is Alice Collyer. Is that Anglo enough for you? Not sure why it matters if one uses one's name or not, but it must have some significance to you. I'd love to sleep with George Allen but I might be a little too liberal for his taste. I'm a top and he might not be able to handle that.

Van

Thank you for clarifying that you're a Libertarian. For one awful moment, I thought that a Republican had snuck into Salon and you know how that makes us feel. Speaking of clarifying, my name is c'est la vie (spelled with a "t") and your xenophobia is quite endearing. On a serious note though, I too don't have gobs of money - never had and probably never will, but my feeling is that money is as important an issue as you make it. I don't begrudge those who do have money, nor would I want to walk the proverbial mile in a rich person's shoes.

Oh Gawd

Cary, please don't do the sports analogies. Salon was my one safe haven away from those. Also what's with the "the ethical stuff is secondary"? Have you become a Republican? I wondered if LW is coming across as desperate and needy when he meets women. I didn't get a sense of what LW wanted (a casual relationship? something more committed?) but getting involved with someone who's already involved. Yipes. It's a recipe for heartbreak and complications.

been there done that

While I didn't go as far as the CR diet, I cut way back on fat and calories and maintained high nutritional value. Oh sure, my cholesterol (LDL) went down but I was totally miserable - I stopped socializing with friends because a home cooked meal became fraught with not wanting to hurt the host's feelings, nor impose my diet on other dinner guests. I believe that one of the reasons why people lose weight on these kinds of diets is because they no longer look forward to their measly meals, therefore their appetites are severely reduced to begin with. I highly recommend Nina Planck's book "Real Food". I'm not doing justice to it by paraphrasing, but basically her theory is that it's the industrialization of food that's the problem, as well as the level of stress in our lives. She recommends going back to eating fresh fruits and veggies, whole milk dairy products, eggs, lard, beef, etc.

variation on the same theme

Is this the same as winning the battle but losing the war? While Gates plays semantics, people are dying and being injured.

turnabout is fair play

if the LW's husband informed her that FIL would be living with them, I think it's only fair that LW should be able to inform husband that FIL will be moving out soon. The situation sounds oppressive and stinky.

how embarrassing

The report suggests we engage the rest of the world, when a little over 3 years ago, we told them to go and f**k themselves because we were going it alone and were tired of diplomacy. The report also suggests we sit down and talk to countries we previously deemed "axis of evil". I'd like some ketchup with my crow.

Original article: Why women aren't funny

Just wondering

Could it be that Hitchens feels threatened by dykes since he feels the need to mention one's orientation as part of his critique? Or could it be that we women don't find bathroom humour very funny? Perhaps bathroom humour is too subtle for our intellect and there are nuances we just don't get. I'll take Wanda Sykes, Paula Poundstone, Ellen DeGeneres any day.

Miracles

This is brilliant! However, we haven't had an immaculate conception in over 2000 years - could Mary's be the next one? I just hope Grandpa Dick doesn't come near the poor kid with a hunting rifle.
