[Read the article: About that flag-pin question]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]You wrote
For McCain, there are many appropriate flags: Y means, "I am dragging anchor;" S means, "Engines going astern;" J means, "On fire, keep clear."
I was thinking something along the lines of:
1. two all-round red lights in a vertical line where they can best be seen;
2. two balls or similar shapes in a vertical line where they can best be seen
Which is the display scheme of "A vessel not under command" (Nautical Rule of the Road 27)

After 7 pages I am surprised no one has yet quoted Sinclair Lewis
[Read the article: About that flag-pin question]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]“When fascism comes to America it will be wrapped in the flag and carrying a cross.”

Article Four of the Constitution won't necessarilly apply...
[Read the article: California Supreme Court won't stay gay marriage ruling]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]One of the reasons for the other states to be involved is that generally if you are married in one state the other states will also recognize your marriage even if you couldn't have been legally married in the other states.

-- Stewsburntmonkey
Actually, the precedent exists that says the other states don't have to recognize marriages they don't agree with.
A state's right to ignore an interracial marriage performed in another state was upheld by the Supreme Court.

Empty Chair in bad taste?
[Read the article: Obama won't be at town hall tonight]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Maybe the reason the empty chair won't be used is that, in the military, an empty chair is often used at formal functions to symbolize comrades that can't be present for the event, such as POW/MIAs, sailors lost at sea, etc...
I would think that McCain, of all people, would know that, and probably squashed the plan proposed by some Republican flunkies who never served.

One thing missing
[Read the article: Opus]

@MICKI Good idea, it makes sense, therefore....
[Read the article: Sen. Ted Stevens is indicted on seven counts]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]There's no way in hell that it will happen, which is good for the Dems because having a female VP would be another thing to entice the still bitter PUMAs with.
However, the very elements of McCain's party that are unhappy with him would go -nuts- if he chose a woman (or a minority) for a running mate. He'd probably lose more votes from his party (from those choosing to sit this election out) than he would gain from undecideds and unhappy Democrats.

Some info on the Admiral...
[Read the article: Obama meets with Bush]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I thought that having an admiral playing butler was a bit of overkill... I as pretty sure the "admiral" title was ceremonial, in the same way that the Surgeon General isn't really a general.
However, I was wrong.
"President George W. Bush today named Rear Admiral Stephen W. Rochon as Director of the Executive Residence and Chief Usher.
Admiral Rochon will be the eighth Chief Usher of the White House.
Admiral Rochon will serve his last day on active duty with the Coast Guard on March 9, and begin his service at the White House on March 12. Admiral Rochon succeeds Gary Walters, who retired in January 2007 after 20 years as White House Chief Usher.
...
With 36 years in public service, Admiral Rochon has an extensive background in personnel management, strategic planning, and effective interagency coordination. As the Coast Guard’s Commander of the Maintenance and Logistics Command Atlantic, Admiral Rochon is responsible for naval and civil engineering, financial management, personnel, legal, civil rights, electronic systems support, and contingency planning across 40 U.S. states, Puerto Rico, Europe, and the Middle East.
A New Orleans native, Admiral Rochon served as the Coast Guard’s Director of Personnel Management in the aftermath of the 2005 hurricanes, providing support for Coast Guard personnel and their families, and ensuring they had housing and new job assignments.
On one hand, I cringe at the thought of someone who has worked hard to get to the top of his field being reduced to a major-domo.
On the other hand, if you have worked hard all your career, and are major history buff, a stint doing protocol stuff in the White House might be just the ticket. There are all sorts of ways to serve your country.
