    Though it probably must have been one of the straighter-chronology versions, since I remember seeing it as a teenager on (Finnish) TV sometime in the late 80ies. Can't remember which language version though - either English or French (w/ subtitles).

    I'm in no way a filmbuff, really not. But for some reason this film stayed in my memory - it was long, and I remember being surprised that it didn't *seem* long. And it was just a plain good old riveting story, and the sets and costumes didn't seem so much cream-cake to me as a meta-comment on how lots of the middle of the 20th century longingly (and falsely) looked on "the good old times".
