Conventional Wisdom

"This happens almost every time I counter some counterfeit nonsense ordinarily held gospel by conventional wisdom."

Conventional wisdom is rarely wise.

George W. Bush will always be my favorite anti-Christ.

Nah, its Dick Cheney who is the real anti-Christ.

Reckless Driver

I remember him for saying that he wanted to run down pedestrians in downtown Washington, D.C. while driving his Corvette. Unfortunately, he actually did this once.

How to talk to Republicans

The Republicans idea of bipartisanship is "do it our way!" The only way to talk with them now it to quote to them from the collected sayings of Rahm Emanuel.

Leave Her Alone

I think the Ds should give Bachmann a pass. After all, she gives journalists everywhere something funny to write about when they don't have anything better to write about. And, she is a source of amusement for the rest of us every time she opens her mouth.

The Media Had Problems With a Train Wreck Too

The local media in Washington DC had many problems with decent reporting on the recent fatal crash on our METRO system. For a while they couldn't even figure out which directions the trains were going, and they didn't bother to ask.

Journalists and Economics

Most journalists do not understand economics. Most of the ones I went to school with flunked their required econ. course at least once, and when they passed it was with a grade of D.

So how can we expect the media to correctly explain economics to the masses?

Old White Men

It's kinda fun watching grumpy old white men grabbing their privates and running for cover.

Carrion's Public Appearance

"What has been a disappointment already, though, is the Urban Affairs office. Its director, former Bronx Borough President Alfonso Carrión, hasn't made a public appearance since Obama named him to the job"

WRONG!!!

He was at the National Building Museum last Wednsday, May 20 to address an urban planning conference. He was very well received. I was there, I talked to him.

Has Salon given up on fact checking?

Da Vinci Code" sequel???

Its a PREQUEL to the Da Vinci Code! It was written first and there are references to Angels & Demons in Da Vinici Code. Reading the books may have been a good idea.

Woman's Body, Woman's Choice

I agree with Thealogian, if it in a woman's body, than she and only she should determine what happens.

Oh, and by the way, my religious beliefs tell me it's not a human life until it breathes it's first breath. And this is just as scientifically valid as life beginning at conception.

Standards?

Did they bother to comply with web standards this time? Or is it Micro$oft's usual "Standards? We don't need no stinken standards!" again.

Original article: PBS's latest infomercial

What to do about PBS Infomercials

"the reason I don't give to PBS: they can the programs I actually watch ... to raise money by broadcasting something like this"

So here is what you do. During pledge week, wait until its time for your favorite show. Then call the number on the screen. Tell the person who answers the phone that you tuned in to watch your favorite show, and found crap instead, so you are not pledging anything, but you would have pledged if your favorite show was on. Take as long as you can explaining this. When you finally have to hang up, do so, and hit redial. Repeat for the entire time your favorite show would have been on. Get your friends and family to do the same.

When the morons who run the station notice pledges for the time slot are down, and there were many calls about the program that should have aired, the lack of $$ might get the message across.

Republican Government

So Jindal is complaining about a Republican President's government that was doing all it could to screw things up and otherwise behave badly so Republicans could say "government doesn't work."

You left out housing

You left out some of the housing that was built during the New Deal, notably the Greenbelt Towns. Unfortunately, because of objections from the usual right wingers, only 3 were built.

One of them, Greenbelt, Maryland remains a vibrant and desirable to this day. Most of the government owned housing is now owned by the residents, so the program did result in increased home ownership.

Also, these towns went from an idea Rexford Tugwell had to residents occupying their homes in about two years. Talk about "shovel ready!"

What do you expect?

What do you expect? This is the Washington Post for god's sake.

We have been there before.

Remember the 68000 series macs? Well an SE 30 won't run any of the latest software. In fact it won't even run the last of the old Mac OSes.

Remember the 600 series Power PC machines? They won't run OSX. And I have a G3 Power PC machine that won't run OSX past 10.3.

There is only so long that you can continue to bring new software to old hardware.

"How much would you pay for a Vikram Pandit, John Thain or Ken Lewis?"

How good are they at shoveling shit?

Thanks

I want to thank you and the rest of the Salon team for the great coverage of this inauguration. I didn't go downtown to join in this time for a bunch of reasons, but Salon helped me realize what was happening.
