Mid Life Crisis
[Read the article: Is it too late to start a band at 45?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Hey LW- I'm in my late 30s and have also been dealing with the mid life thing. Mine is the stage tho - coulda woulda shoulda been a star on Broadway, y'know? It's painful, isn't it?
So a couple of years ago I quit the dayjob and stayed home to work on my second love - writing. Wasn't going to let the muse escape me again. I wrote a really cool non-fiction book, promoted the hell out of it, got an agent, was on TV, in the papers, etc. But every time my book got up to bat - actually got a hearing at a publisher's editorial meeting - it was rejected by some drone in a suit mumbling about making money! What a jerk, right? :)
So here's the deal LW - I spent five years of my life on this thing and here I am dropped by my agent, having spent a lot of time, energy and love on a dream that will never be. I've been rejected by every publisher in NY. I can try again at some other time, but not soon.
Yeah, you can start a band, but what are your real goals? Do you want to make an album and have it go gold? You want to make a handsome living playing gigs? You can try but be prepared to face it if it doesn't work, even as you work your fingers to the bone trying to make it so.
I'm back in the dayjob scene at the same salary I was at when I left. It's not bad, I own a house and all, but if I'd known the dream wasn't going to work out I'd have worked harder at being a drone. Drones make good money, have accumulated lots of time off, and generally feel pretty safe. In fact they're so safe they have time for dangerous daydreams that draw them away like moths to flames ...

Anything Goes
[Read the article: "Eugenics" or freedom of choice?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]... guilty of the very thing it purports to oppose: helping to create a nightmarish future where our population will be engineered, rather than born of individuals respected enough to make their own decisions.
I don't see how what they propose does any such thing. I think you're feeling a little defensive.
It is true, however, that the proposal is pushy. I agree with the other poster that Down's parents should be made available to describe life raising such a child, but to require a meeting is a bit much.

femlibbers?
[Read the article: Undercover attack on Planned Parenthood]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Anon, if you want people to take you seriously, calling women whose opinions you don't agree with "femlibbers" is not the way to go. It indicates to me that your interest is not in protecting underage girls, but in promoting a certain political agenda on the backs of frightened, scared, and helpless young women.
Seems to me you would like to control women, not protect them. It seems particularly that you'd like to see them stop having underage/unmarried or otherwise "sinful" sex. Punishing them by forcing them to bear children of unintended pregnancy is one way to control them. Forcing them to tell their families about their sexual activity is another way.
You should be ashamed, but I know you're not. You don't appear to be that decent.

Moral Majority
[Read the article: The stone is cast]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I was a teenager when Falwell's brand of olde tyme religion ruled the land and boy did we pay. At least we had fun wearing "Immoral Minority" buttons on our coats.
His beliefs were, in the opinion of many including me, a perversion of Christianity. But let's face his true legacy - he did more to firmly advance his beliefs than probably any of us who have posted here. He knew how to make an impact. He was shrewd and savvy - he played the game so well. He made an entire country feel his presence. He helped change the direction of a nation. Yes, for the worse, but still ... to paraphrase Eddie Izzard, I can hardly even get down to the gym!
There is something to admire in everyone. Yes, everyone.
RIP Jerry, you big jackass.

Ugh
[Read the article: The boss's incompetent son wants an employment reference!]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Is it going to kill you to say a few nice things about this kid to a couple potential employers? It's a dog eat dog world out there. Would it kill you to help a person out? Did anyone ever give you a break?

Mentally Ill?
[Read the article: I'm ashamed to be ashamed of my father]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Ugh, the guy is not mentally ill. He cut the 20 foot shrub when the town "ordered" him to do it. He can respond when he is moved to do so.
We're also not talking about an elderly person. He's not even 60.
People have expressed their concern and offered help. He is an adult of sound mind and if wishes to live this way, even if it's for bad reasons like self-punishment, there's nothing anyone else can do. Eventually I imagine the place will be condemned. He'll have to take some action then, won't he?
And don't do all that stuff Cary said. Fix your own roof or go to Cancun or something useful like that.
Regarding the will and his assets ... this is painful but the truth is that's out of your control too. And you're not really and truly entitled to anything. I know that sucks - it's tradition that it be handed down to you but it's not a given. You're going to have to let that one go for the most part and just hope for the best. If he's on her birth certificate then she could have appeared even after his death and made her claim. Imagine how shocking that would have been!
Focus on your own life. Trust me, you'll be so much happier for it and so will the people you love.

Wow
[Read the article: Healthy, my ass]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]She looks normal to me except for that epic ass which, like Pam Anderson's former oversized knockers, is way out of proportion to the rest of her. I find it hard to believe that she didn't have surgery of some kind. Just lucky I guess?
