Our Party is divided
[Read the article: Obama's surge extends down the Potomac]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]and in general the Dems have no idea how to fight. Centerist Dems, the kind that like Dunkin Dounuts coffe as one poster put it, have lots of incentive to go for McCain. He's not a bible thumping loon and the far right hates him. The Starbucks drinking Dems say they won't support anyone but Obama.
We can't unite ourselves around a candidate, and we expect to unite a nation. Ha.
I think the pukes will introduce McCain as the hero who did his duty in Vietnam (and was held captive) and tout his decades of Senatorial experience (something we were impotent at doing for Kerry). They will smash Obama with the scandals we know about and a few that we don't. They are experts at it.
I know lots of you hate to hear it but I'm telling you this isn't "a new day" ... it's the same old dem story that we've been playing out since Vietnam - we suck at winning elections, but we're great at getting ourselves worked up.

Slackie
[Read the article: Obama's surge extends down the Potomac]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]The enthusiasm for Dean was real and immense, and the "old media" took him down in one swipe by unfairly playing "the scream" endlessly on the news.
My son never watches TV. True enough that he's a new media boy like you. But while my mom may use email, she still gets her news from the TV as do millions and millions of voters. Don't discount the power of old media yet. The very people who the Dem nominee needs to enchant are still pining over the end of Johnny Carson's Tonight Show.

Lynx
[Read the article: Obama's surge extends down the Potomac]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Don't you think that some of those who voted for Clinton will also cross the lines and go for McCain? McCain is appealing to lots of centerist dems who don't believe that Obama is the Second Coming like you guys do.

mother
[Read the article: Blood-and-guts politics]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Camille, I wish you'd talk about the fear of Hillary Clinton as a candidate in context of your belief that men,"... sense that at any moment they could be returned to that slavery and servitude they experienced under a woman's thumb, when they were a boy in the shadow of the mother."
Is that why you hate and fear her too? Cause boys aren't the only ones who lived in the shadow of the mother.

Beauty in the Burbs
[Read the article: Help! I'm a prisoner in a big suburban house!]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I work in NYC and come home to the burbs every night. When I pull in my driveway there is usually a bunny or two nibbling on the grass. They look so funny hopping away in a grey furry panic - like they don't see me single every day!
In the backyard there is a koi pond that I dug myself one spring years ago. I love to sit by it in the warm weather and drink tea. Every now and then an American bullfrog adopts it and at night I can hear him making that frog noise while he's cruising for chicks.
The birdfeeder is visible from my window.
I hardly know my neighbors, but the interactions we have are good. I enjoy sitting by my fireplace in the winter and reading a good book.
I also like to cook in my nice kitchen with the granite countertops which are impervious to damage.
Life in the burbs is what you make it my friend. Where some see mindless homogeny, others find peace and comfort.

I see subtext
[Read the article: Quote of the day: Obama on Clinton ]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]First of all, why is this a quote of the day? Seems pretty un-noteworthy to me. But if we're going to dissect remember that all words in these statments are carefully chosen for maximum impact.
" ... periodically ... when she's feeling down ..."
No one sees a "period" reference here, like he's implying that Hillary is on the rag or has PMS? Cause it's pretty obvious to me.

Damn, Salon letter writers are as mean as rattlesnakes
[Read the article: Opus]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]It was a good, cute cartoon. That's all anyone should ask. You guys are freakin mean and for the most part it seems to be for meanness' sake too.

Both sides fight dirty
[Read the article: It ain't over yet]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Of course both sides are going to "be mean" and "fight dirty". This isn't a tea party and the pukes are not going to play nice when we finally decide on a candidate. This ridiculous notion that everyone is supposed to have a civilized discussion just flies in the face of 200+ years of politics in America. This is about passion and ambition - this is human and it's going to raucous. Learn to love it.
I have been a huge Hillary supporter and I am thrilled to see her win. I also love her speech about how this one is for all of us who've ever been down, etc. Feels good. That said, I too embrace the idea of a Hillary/Obama ticket with the Pres slot going to whoever wins this Rocky-like battle. Seems like a perfect solution to me - then whichever side ends up disappointed that their candidate didn't win gets a partial victory, and America gets a really great team to consider in the general election.
If nothing else, this has been really exciting, has it not?

The Depression Choir
[Read the article: Help! I'm committing professional suicide!]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Yes, it's simply depression and a magic pill will make it all better. That's all - just a magic pill. No work needs to be done. Just take a pill and shut up already.
Oh wait, maybe it's just the placebo effect http://www.motherjones.com/news/feature/2003/11/ma_565_01.html
We all want easy answers. Just take yer pills and shut up.
