  • Thank you Salon

[Read the article: Day of reckoning]

Now this was a good story about a TV show. It was a discussion of a show I love, not a spoiler piece. Perfection!

  • My Rule

Never destroy irreplacable things. Pick one you like and keep it up, give the rest to other family as holiday gifts.

I honestly don't know enough to comment about the big diplomacy questions. I always feel so lost when it comes to this subject. But I have to say it does bother me to see western women, or women from anyplace for that matter, wearing oppressive clothing. Come on - you guys know that hijab is about controlling women. Would you really be okay with her wearing a burka "as a sign of respect" if the circumstances were different?

And I don't give a rat's ass what the Christians, Jews, Mormans, or Shakers did or do. My point is that it is a bad example for a female leader in a western country to don a garment that is associated with oppression.

But you know, I'm a liberal so I look for trouble. Other than that she seems pretty cool to me. You have to love anyone who gets Cheney so mad that he goes on Limbagh for a public rant.

  • Women may have invented weapons

[Read the article: Military rape a result of "feminist pressures"?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Didn't I read not too long ago that female monkeys of some kind were observed making and using weapons to kill prey? The males were strong enough to use their hands, but the females needed some assitance and they invented spears which made them very efficient hunters. Anthropoligists are now re-thinking the origins of weapons and tools.

Women are not by nature less agressive or less capable of violence. What do they always say about a mother protecting her young?

I don't understand this idea that women are out of place in war.

  • Imus in the Morning

[Read the article: He's sorry now]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I remember Imus from the 70s - great music and decent chatter cause DJs weren't expected to talk non-stop like they are now. He has fallen a long way since the days when he ruled the New York airwaves. I imagine that all this attention must feel kind of good for him. It's been a long time since anyone cared what he had to say.

  • Obviously

[Read the article: May they please the court]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

The problem with a domestic violence lawyer announcing that she enjoys being spanked by men during sex (while showing us in a nude pictorial to boot) is it indicates that she's a person who enjoys simulated sexual violence. Her actions confuse the line between violence and love and sex. Someone in her position should be working to make those lines more clear, not more blurry.

Also she has allowed herself to be sexually objectified for the pleasure of men. Part of this titilation is the idea that she'll let you hit her while you fuck her. I wonder if the abusive husbands of her domestic violence clients would take her seriously in court. What kind of example is she for abused women?

Maybe Hugh Hefner will hire her.

  • Thank You Michael Sullivan

Guys, absorb what Michael wrote. He's right on target.

  • More Practical Advice

[Read the article: I'm a jazz pianist, nearly 50, and I need to make some real money!]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I suggest that you sell something. That's a career you can get into at any age with no fancy training. Cars would probably be good. You can take some time getting good at it because you've managed to support yourself through music for so long, what does it matter if it takes three months to get your first sale?

BTW, bravo making a living of any kind in music. You are tough - far tougher than you think you are. Learning to sell won't be hard for a person as tough as you. Just remember, it's not about "tricking" people into giving you their money, it's about finding out what people need and making sure they get it. Everyone needs a car - find a brand you believe in and tell people who come to you why your brand is the best.

I read through some of your letters and you appear to have such anger toward women. You have posted lots of accusations, anger, and generalizations about us. I hope you're just trolling because the energy put into hating ... it's not good for you and I mean that sincerely. I would say the same to a woman who posted venmous things about men too. You've only got so much time in life after all ...

  • Frustrated

[Read the article: I left New York for San Diego and now I don't know where I am]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I am a born-and-raised New Yorker and I still have yet to wittness a juicy crime of any kind, much less something dramatic like a shooting. Maybe you just needed to move to the burbs and commute like me instead of going all the way across the country.

And ambition is overrated. The moment my family life allows I'd love to move to a mellow place where no one has any ambition and are non-confrontational. Who needs this rat race shit anyway? And, trust me, it's colder here than you remember.

  • Well ..

[Read the article: Not exactly Stephen Colbert]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I would guess that all three are a bit more used to "yes men" than actually having argue their points. Perhaps that's why it got so ugly. I admit I could be stereotyping.

  • Since someone asked

[Read the article: Do I have to be a mommy to "opt out"?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

As a mom I would be ok with this as long as aunie didn't try to parent, or critize my parenting, or sabatoge my rules in any way. If she wants simply to go to all the piano recitals, take them to cancun once in a while, and help them get their science fair project, that's good. But be careful - you never know what's sacred. For example, I alone want to help my daughter get the prom dress or my son get his license. My cousin once freaked out because someone else cut her toddler's hair. Tread lightly and seriously consider that maybe you really want a family of your own. It's still possible you know. My friend just had her first at 38.
