Really, now.
[Read the article: Upending the Mayberry Machiavellis]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]"Mayberry Machiavellis?" What does that mean? It sounds like something Imus would say on a more restrained day.
I agree with the earlier letter that this is a lot to put on Ms. Goodling. Does she really believe all these things about good vs. evil? Was she interviewed for this piece? Is it based on her memoirs? And have her recent experiences had any effect on her beliefs? (Now THAT would be a story!)
I've met a few Regent students. They're not all fundies (though I'm sure it helps). Some attend for the sake of convenience--Regent offers the only part-time law program in the area. It also provides a geographically convenient location for full-time students; the next-closest law school is in Williamsburg, over an hour away.
Although many people might not choose Regent (I wouldn't), remember, too, that Yeshiva and Georgetown are also run by religious folks.
This ain't DC, where there's a law school on every block. But it also ain't "Mayberry," whatever that means.

Religious schools
[Read the article: Upending the Mayberry Machiavellis]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Relax--I wasn't saying Regent is the "same" as G'town and Yeshiva! Tuition is far cheaper...
Seriously, I was only pointing out that all are run by religious organizations, so let's not make that our gauge. Rather, say "politically partisan" or even "[right/left] wing," if that's what we mean.
As for Fr. Drinan -- he is a big & good soul and I was always a fan.
(Know the joke about Clinton and Georgetown? The Jesuits wanted to keep him!)
Is Virginia Beach = Mayberry? VB has more traffic, fun houses, and sandcastles! Or is he suggesting that rural Mayberryesque areas are comprised of fundies who become DOJ disciples? Haven't seen much of that in my county of 6,000. The mega-churches are elsewhere. So, I can't decide whether the Mayberry reference is a slur against the country or against Andy Griffith; neither is deserving. For all I know, Ms. Goodling originally hails from Detroit.

A plea for sanity
[Read the article: Memo to Bill O'Reilly: More immigrants equals less crime]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Local NPR host Cathy Lewis had some excellent callers when she covered this story earlier this week:

How refreshing that local citizens not only support their mayor, but also understand the difference between municipal and federal governments.
The proper academic term for blaming the Scots-Irish (read: Appalachians) for the violence in the U.S. is "the 'Snuffy Smith' effect." You rarely saw Pa drive anything more powerful than a donkey-pulled wagon, but he always had that jug handy. Figures.
