I am just reading William L. Shirer's "Berlin Diaries". Written while Shirer was in Germany as an American correspondent -- right up to America's entry into the war.
I was struck, written as it was in almost daily entries, or in today's terms, "posts" -- the similarity between Shirer's diary and Glenn's blog.
Shirer was there, he knew, he saw, with clear eyes, (while his fellow correspondents did not) the clear danger of war -- the gathering storm. His posts about the day by day erosion of German civil rights, the growing militarism, the insane leadership, closely resemble the what Glenn does here each day. It's quite frightening to read those entries, and quite illuminating to see the German people, the French, and of course the Yanks, rationalizing the gathering storm away.
But that is not why I replied. I wanted to mention that in 1940, Shirer was on a German warship, actually doing radio reports to America. The crew kept asking him the same thing, "Why do the British fight us?".
They truly had no idea.
The news never changes, it just happens to different people.
How about an assault on a sitting Prime Minister by the President of the United States?
While in office, Pearson resisted U.S. pressure to enter the Vietnam War. Pearson spoke at Temple University in Philadelphia on April 2, 1965, while visiting the United States, and voiced his support for a negotiated settlement to the Vietnam War. When he visited U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson hours later, Johnson strongly berated Pearson. According to Canadian legend, Johnson grabbed Pearson by the lapels, shook him, and shouted "You pissed on my rug!"
It's no legend, I know people who used to work for Pearson at the time. It happened.
American governments threaten us all the time. Why do you think marijuana is still illegal here?
Como sobre nos mostrar algum respeito e a afixação em inglês? É você nuts?
I just don't spend that much time on him... Buhs
Hitler killed Jews? I don't believe it. He loved dogs, he went to church, he was a vegetarian who called meat eaters "blood thirsty" monsters. No way he could have been that "callous".
Time for a rewrite or an apology or both Mr. Koppelman.
Callous? Are you serious? 1.3 million dead Iraqis, 10's of thousand of Afghanis, thousands of soldiers. These butchers swim in blood. They love it. They dream of it.
What would it take to convince you of that these monsters were capable of anything, anything at all?
This story may be crap; it probably is not. And it is certainly not crap because Alex "credulous" Koppelman believes that any of that gang of international war criminals had the slightest, tiniest, respect for human life!
Sheesh..
Koppelman just posted that it will be 30,000 troops.
No word yet on how many South Africans, Russians and Bulgarians... (Xe Services)
Like most Americans, and yes, Canadians, weaned on decades of cop shows, where the "perp" is automatically guilty, you seem to believe that the moment someone is arrested they are guilty.
I mean, if they POLICE arrested him, he must be guilty.
Tell that to the Innocence Project. Tell that to Hurricane Carter.
Ask your hubbie. He'll tell you about that constitution of yours, a very very fine document by the way.
ACCUSED PERSONS ARE PRESUMED INNOCENT UNTIL GODDAMN PROVEN!!! GUILTY.
In a court, with lawyers, judges, members of the public, the press, and jurors. I know, it sounds quaint.
Sorry about teh caps, but my impression is that you are little hard of hearing.
Yeah, I am in Ottawa. It's really cold here, you would not like it. We have our own problems, like Harper, who loves war.
As for adopting you, I married a Japanese woman, and I was barely able to get her in the country.
The contagion is spreading.
If anyone who thought that Gitmo could be closed in a year is "deluded", where does that leave your leader, who, I seem to recall, said he would close Gitmo in a year.
Was he: lying, stupid, misled, or "deluded"? Those are your logical options.
Would that have worked? I don't think so.
I know you are a lot less cynical than I am, and good for you, seriously; but I believe that "they" never did listen to the people much, and nowadays, not at all. They read the polls, they know the level support, but I see very little evidence that they care. It's all about what can be sold, or failing that, simply pushed through.
Jeez, we can't even get marijuana legal, let alone turn around the carriers.
America is one vast war machine; its what you do.
Maybe that's why no one called.
Real change will come to America, but only after your country has virtually collapsed; then, maybe, a new democracy will arise.
Even millions of people in the streets could not stop the invasion of Iraq. What good some phone calls?
Still though, it could have, should have, been tried. We have to keep trying.
Very few, if any, here at UT, at claiming that Obama has "done nothing". We all understand very well the vast problems he faces.
The problem is many of us don't agree with what he has actually done! There is a vast difference in those two positions.
First of all, thank you for the intelligible post (in English)
Europe is left? Merkel? Sarkozy!??
How do you define "left"?
Man, that's great stuff. Very illustrative of the mad king syndrome. 300 years later and still no cure for imperial hubris.
