There's no reason whatever to be upset about the defeat of this perfect illustration of Democratic impotence. As Slackie and WayneBruce both recognize, the problem with the Democrats is that they are craven, gutless Eunuchs, who have absolutely no desire to confront Bush and the Republicans on their rape of the Constitution, but just want to grovel quietly on the sidelines until they can back their way into the White House in 2008.
Of course, the Eunuchs would be more than happy to continue begging the Republicans to be nice to them, and to keep eating whatever greasy, warmed-up piece of shit Bush orders them to swallow. But this latest humiliation may make that politically untenable and force the Democrats to respond to their own voters. Specifically, with Gonzales's continued sneering defiance, the Eunuchs may be forced - no matter how bitterly reluctant they are about it - to actually serve the subpoenas on Rove and Miers they isseud over a month ago, and then respond to the numerous felonies that will inevitably be uncovered. At that point, it's likely that impeachment will become the only viable option.
THAT course of action, of course, doesn't require any goddamn 60 votes. And as for those who point out that Gonzales won't actually get convicted, please try to understand: THAT DOESN'T MEAN A GODDAMN THING! It is politically irrelevant whether the Attorney General for the next 18 months if Gonzales or another of Bush's half-wit lackeys (though the Republcian Party simply wouldn't permit Bush to retain Gonzales once he's impeached, no matter how petulant and delusional Bush is). The point of impeachment is to cripple Bush politically, and to humiliate, demonize, and excoriate the Republican Party as much as humanly possible. That is the only way to clean the stink of Republicanism from the American politcal process, even if it causes the damn Eunuchs to shit in their pants every 6 hours from now to election day.
As always, it's worth considering how the gutless, craven opportunists in the Democratic Party will manage to fuck up this situation in heretofore unimaginable ways, and provide maximum political cover to this prototypical manifestation of Republican fascism. Undoubtedly, the Imbecile-in-Chief will reluctantly -- and with great magnanimity -- agree to close the Guantanamo Gulag and transfer its torturees to the American court system; all the Democrats will have to do is formally acknowledge that this was a completely lawful and appropriate step in the Global Neocon War on Muslims and Other Subhuman Savages, agree never to criticize the architects or operators of the Gulag in public, and possibly lick Bush's scrotum on the White House lawn.
Just for fun, let's pretend that the members of the Democratic Party were in possession of testicles all their own, and -- instead of groveling quietly on the sidelines in anticipation of the 2008 elections -- were motivated by an actual desire to salvage our democracy from the continuing depredations of this gang of Republican thugs. The strategy would be pretty damn simple: start immediate Congressional hearings featuring witnesses that have been kidnapped and tortured at Republican prisons throughout the world; point out in daily press conferences that the Republicans are in direct violation of the law as defined by the most conservative appellate court in the United States; accuse Bush of wanting to torture people far more than he wants to stop terrorists; and - most of all - participate in ZERO negotiations on closing Guantanamo. No one on the left gives a shit whether the Democratic Congress is successful at getting Bush to actually close Guantanamo. What we do care about is holding this aggregation of human filth accountable for their crimes and cleaning the stink of Republicanism from the U.S. political process.
This statement is about as politically fortuitous as it gets, on the admittedly unlikely assumption the Democrats have the balls to exploit it. Specifically, the time is now -- right goddamn now -- for every Democratic campaign to vigorously point out that Nosferatu Guiliani plans to appoint precisely the same judges as Brownback, notwithstanding his disgusting, mealy-mouthed claims that he regards the decision as a matter of individual conscience.
