  • Like Bush? You''ll LOVE (Guiliani) or (Romney) or (Thompson)

[Read the article: War Room contest: Pick the Democrats' bumper sticker]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

The time to start excoriating, demonizing, and ridiculing every one of these loathsome scumbags is right now, while each of them is trying to outflank the others with appeals to the racist, authoritarian religious fanatics of the Republican base. The fascist policies of the Republican candidates have never been -- and never will be -- clearer, with Romney trying to turn the citizenry of every city in America into a wetback-hunting lynch mob, and Thompson trying to insure that they all have enough guns to do the job. Giuliani's history of organized nigger-hatred and police-state tactics speak for themselves, of course.

Come general election time, every one of these rats will be knifing each other in the back trying to scamper off the USS George W. Bush. The key isn't to ever argue about it, but simply ignore it. Thus, the bumper sticker:

"Like George W. Bush? You'll love ('Dolph Giuliani) ("Covergirl" Romney) ("Redneck" Thompson).

  • Here's An Alternative Scenario

[Read the article: My girlfriend tried cocaine at a party! She was drunk! Oh my God!]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Though I think Cary’s advice is profoundly insightful, I’d like to propose an alternative that embraces its basic premise but approaches the problem from a somewhat different perspective. Specifically, I’d suggest that the LW speak to his girlfriend in a spirit of humility and say something along the lines of the following:

“I care for you very much and believe we might have had some kind of future together, but since I found out you tried cocaine once a year ago, I’ve had a great deal of trouble sleeping at night. I wish I could forgive you for this indiscretion committed well before we even knew each other, but I’m afraid I’d only be kidding myself and would never want to lead you on. Accordingly, I think it best that we part now, in order to avoid the unbearable pain of having to separate later on.”

At that point, I suspect the LW’s girlfriend might respond with something along the lines of, “Hey, no problem. Frankly, it’s suddenly become apparent to me that you’re a throbbing cock of enormous proportions, and I don’t think I could possibly bear to spend another 30 seconds with you, much less contemplate a future as your girlfriend.” Perhaps after a several more such incidents resulting from other “unforgivable” moral transgressions committed by future girlfriends, the LW will realize that problem isn’t the absence of moral infallibility of those around him, but the fact that he’s a closed-minded, self-righteous douchebag.

  • Too Good To Be True; But We Can Sure Hope!

[Read the article: Larry Craig's comeback?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Sure, it's little more than a tantalizing dream at the moment, but Craig, in fact, doesn't have a damn thing to lose by telling the Republican establishment to go fuck themselves.

God, I would love - love - to watch the Senate convene hearings where they express the standard Republican indignation at any moral transgressions that threaten their political standing. So, it's the lack of a guilty plea that makes all the difference, is it? How cool would it be to see McConnell explain how the rest of the Republican toilet jockeys are more than welcome to stay in the Party, as long as they're not stupid enough to admit the truth. Besides, a guilty verdict handed down by a jury of his peers didn't make a damn bit of difference in Scooter-gate, did it?

Beyond the sheer inherent joy at watching Republicans writhe in humiliation and anguish, it's critically important to acknowledge the tactical implications such incidents have on the Democrats' electoral prospects. Ok, let's be sure to emphasize Obama's shining-city-on-a-hill, uniter-not-divider, why-can't-we-all-just-get-along shtick whenever possible. Then, let's make sure to keep in mind the capacity to demoralize the Republican base and suppress their turnout on election day by demonizing, excoriating, ridiculing, humilating, and demonstrating disgust, loathing and contempt for everything they value and respect in life.
