I don't understand this tendency to call people we don't respect by their first names. The Bush administration did the same thing with Saddam Hussein. Fox news does the same thing with then-Senator Obama during the election. Use of these public figures' first names is a way of making them sound less significant and more hokey. It offers up the illusion that the reporter (or Op-Ed columnist) is all buddy-buddy with the person in question, and robs them of some of their dignity.

Besides, and more importantly, I was expecting this to be a story about fans of the well-known Canadian Prog-Rock band. Don't let that lying blowhard steal their name recognition.

Only Keith could pull off such a deft use of "Nigger" in a cartoon. Bravo! Hurrah for no language being off-limits. Now if only he can find a way to call Sarah Palin a "cunt" without offending anyone.

I don't make a habit of digital piracy too often, but when it comes to the Olympics, I gotta tell you, I make an exception.

I work nights, and haven't been able to catch much of the broadcast. In fact, I missed the opening ceremonies. Browsing online, I found a bit-torrent file of the event (a hefty 4 gig, 3 hour file) and downloaded it to watch them on my computer.

I didn't realize at the time, but it was actually the Australian broadcast of the events, and I have to say, I was delighted by the nature of the commentary. I'm so tired of American patriotic/nationalistic blowhard-ism. It was a refreshing change of pace to hear attention given to non-us athletes, and their commentary over the Opening Ceremonies was thankfully sparse, allowing me to enjoy them with only occasion comments about the events unfolding.

Hurrah for the internet.

This strip reminded me of the fantastic conversation that Cerebus, the main character from the comic book of the same name, has a with "Dave", his creator. The specific book, "Minds", written by Dave Sim, touches on a very interesting meta concept. How does one communicate with God, if your every action is dictated by that creator.

Cerebus is a flawed figure, and he blames Dave, saying something to the extent of "If bread is bad, you don't blame the bread, you blame the baker."

Dave responds by saying, "But in this situation, you are the baker, and the bread is your life."

Worth looking into, for people who like somewhat cerebral comics.

If Jackson is acting more like George Lucas in this regard, perhaps it's not such a bad thing.

Lucas created the Star Wars, but it didn't truly reach its pinnacle till someone else was at the helm.

Remember, Empire Strikes Back was directed by Irvin Kershner, with much of its dialogue written by Carrie Fisher.

I'm no fan of del Toro's work (I thought Hellboy was an atrocious remake of the comic, and Pan's Labyrinth left me feeling cold and bored) but maybe he's just what the doctored ordered.

After that dismal King Kong remake, I guess I kinda feel like maybe Jackson's not all he's been cracked up to be.

I read King's column daily (except when he blathers on and on about baseball) and this is the first time I've actually seen or heard the man speak. Aside from the caricature that adorns his site, I had no idea what he looked like.

Today, I feel like I've seen the Wizard behind the curtain. Plus, the video was excellent, and well-worth watching -- despite being about baseball. :)

I just adore that Keef's "idea-light-bulb" in the third panel is a low energy usage bulb. Nice little touch.

What's the little back thing that appears between his eyes in the two right panels? Any why does he have crucifixes in his ears?

Man, Rabbit bites wasn't initially funny, and it hasn't gotten better. I'll try and watch it again in another couple months, and see if it's improved.

I suspect she just created a funny little video of her staring at the camera, and when she found that people started watching it, she honed the process.

Audiofile needs to be better, not gone.

Like all radio broadcasts, it needs to be able to filter in occasional gems from more familiar bands. The reason Audiofile was great was because it exposed us to new music, but the way to make it draw people in would be for it to splash in a little familiar color.

I'm sure there's audio of this sort available legally online somewhere.

And, by the way, I'm happy to seek it out for a small stipend :)
