[Read the article: Quote of the Day]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]You and I need to sit down and argue for hours over coffee some time.
No, I don't think you are a warrior in the battle of the sexes (though that does bring up an interesting idea for a fictional story, or an erotic movie), but rather I get the sense that you see matters as being a competition between the sexes.
"Was that the reason women were underrepresented in higher education until the 60s and 70s? Because they lacked personal initiative?"
No, that was primarily because a lot of women weren't allow to go college in the 70s, because their families felt they could only afford to send their sons to colleges (yeah that's a simplistic answer, but I am sure you can agree with it).
"Basically, you're blaming the crisis of males in education in this country on the boys themselves--they're all lazy, sleazy, addicted criminals."
No, I am blaming the patriarchy for encouraging boys to put more importance on get laid rather than studying, because according to society, and I am sure you will agree with me on this one, a boy can only considered himself a man if he scores p*ssy at as young an age as possible. Sports and the Sunday morning love of sports are emphasized way too heavily to boys, I am sure that you will also agree with me on that one, and I won't blamed the patriarchy for encouraging drug use and crime in boys, but why is it that boys are more likely to use drugs and commit crimes than girls are? As a concerned father of a boy, I really want to know.
However, I will blame the patriarchy for encouraging boys to be violent, just look at the PS3 and XBOX games, which I believe does do a lot to encourage boys to engage in drug use and crime.

Funny!!!
[Read the article: Selling (out) girls' self-esteem]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]It's funny that the trolls think I would take insult as being called a woman.
Yet more proof that they hate women, as if we needed more.
I don't hate men, I just wish they didn't ever rape, ever abuse spouses or children, ever oppress anyone, and ever start wars.

To Leftychris
I am hurt that you did not accept my suggest of coffee.
One thing you omit about the 60s and 70s is that during that time frame it was uncommon for families to have less than 3 kids, where as today it is uncommon for families to have more than 2. Also it was not common for mothers of 18 and 19 year olds in the 60s and 70 to work outside of the home. Most families, with only one bread winner, in the 60 and 70 felt they could only afford to send at most 2 of their kids (of the 3 or more kids that they had) to colleges, so they preferred to pay for their sons instead of their daughters, as they saw future stay at moms not in need of a college degree anyways. Or at least that it what every 50-60 year old woman, of today, has told me.
I am surprised you disagreed with me on that one.
"But as I pointed out in my last post, sports and sex have always been obsessions of men."
Sex yes, but 24 hour sports channels and cable television did not exist in most homes in the 60s and 70s (and of course PS3 and XBOX didn't exist at all). Most boys of the 60s and 70s listened to sports only on their radios, and the fanaticism with sports was not anywhere near as acute during that time frame as it is today. There also wasn't as many professional sports teams in the 60s and 70s, and the playoffs seasons have extended a lot since the 60s and 70s. Today most boys know the names of every player on all of their favorite sports teams, but don't know where Britain is on a map, the years of the Second World War, or the president who decided to nuke Japan.
"I'll agree that boys are socialized to be aggressive, although I'd stop short of saying violent."
Lets visit an American inner city neighborhood together, and we'll debate that one further.
"One other thing--I wish you and others would stop using the word "patriarchy" in all cases when the words "culture" or "society" would be more appropriate and less loaded."
Culture and society is heavily influenced by the patriarchy. The rules, traditions, customs, and norms of most societies and cultures were overwhelming written by male dictators, both political and religious, which is why we consider the rules, traditions, customs, and norms of society and culture to be patriarchal and a part of the patriarchy.

Starting Wars!
[Read the article: Selling (out) girls' self-esteem]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I am a serviceman, you twit, so of course I am not going to blame myself and my coworkers for starting the Iraq war. I blame Dubya, and the mostly male neo-cons he listened to. If Dubya had been a woman, do you think he would have chosen to invade Iraq. Would Hitler have invaded Poland, France, and the USSR had he been a woman? Would Saddam have invaded Iran or Kuwait had he been a woman. Would the entirely male government of Japan in 1941 decided to authorize an attack on Pearl Harbor had they all been women?
I think not.
