Dear Shit is shit
[Read the article: Karen Finley smears Bush all over]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Got it - you and other letter writers don't like artists or art. You are sure they are making money hand over fist - and your tax money in fact. Truth is, it's the Republicans taking most of it to give to their buddies. You are being successfully distracted by their bullshit. The amount of "your" money going to art is miniscule. The amount going to the war and to corporate subsidies is huge. Hooray!
You may as well just register as a Republican - you've swallowed their lines, hook and sinkers. Or you could be one of those cranky libertarians who don't like anything about government anywhere - you may as well bitch about the Drivers License Bureau in your town, or your postal delivery person. It's all the same to you. And, by the way, personal attacks are not a compelling argument for or against anything. Unless you're a Republican.

Depressing, but...
[Read the article: Lapdogs]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Of course, we all already know all this. I knew on September 12, 2001 that Bush was going after Saddam, and so did everyone else. That the Bushies have the MSM in their pockets is transparently obvious, and has been for years. And while Eric's excerpt is notable for the statistics and specifics, it's not surprising or news. Mostly I feel sadness that, during the ramp-up to the war, all of our frantic protesting was done in isolation. If we had just been given equal coverage...
I don't watch or listen to or read mainstream news, and haven't since monica-madness. Not even NPR is free from propaganda anymore. I depend on a handful of websites to get my news, and so far, the timeliness and accuracy has been far superior, on most topics I care about, than MSM.
I really suggest that you all do the same, and take time out to communicate to the MSM business offices why you are cancelling your subscription, or failing to tune in, or even, not rejoining public radio. A large-scale boycott is actually possible, and desirable. Advertisers will notice. All these sons-of-bitches bleed when you cut them at the bottom-line. Then we'll see some change.

The comics universe is not limited to superheroes
[Read the article: Hooray for spandex!]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I also stopped reading comics in the eary 90's. I was an X-men fan but it seemed like the story lines were repeating, the art all looked alike and the endless crossovers just got to be too much to keep up with. But it bears mentioning that comics fans have always had more choices than DC and Marvel, both of which have always been fixated on superheroes.
I still keep issues by Comico, Vortex Comics, Dark Horse Comics, Slave Labor Graphics, and Fantagraphics - many are works of cultural philosophy and art. All the above, save Comico, are still publishing, and all have a variety of titles, unique artwork and some really original viewpoints. I'm sure there are dozens more out there now. Support your local underground comics publisher!

Who the NSA should be wiretapping instead of peace groups
[Read the article: "Kingdom Coming: The Rise of Christian Nationalism"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]This is what real treason looks like - an organized cult-like movement to seize power from the legitimate government. You must take this seriously, because, even as a small group, these Christian extremists can cause great damage. If their tactics are sufficiently political and covert, these people can wind up in office, deciding the fate of our families.
Please be reminded of the Christian Coalition, now defunct and powerless, but they trained a generation of stealth Christian state candidates in their election workshops in the late 80's - early 90's. Those who were elected to school boards and county commissions then are now in the state legislatures and driving the anti-gay, anti-woman, and anti-abortion legislation that is so widespread.
One of the reasons that they are so dangerous is that they are planning for a broad time-scheme, while most secular Americans are living day-to-day. Related to that big-picture ability is that each member of the movement sees himself as just one small cog in the greater wheel, so they readily subvert their own intelligence in favor of the Plan. Meanwhile, we are all wrapped up in our own lives, and our own opinions, leading to the famous Democratic infighting. Bottom line, once again, we liberals will be foiled by our own lack of planning, foresight and worldview.
