Mr. Tennis does it again
[Read the article: I dream of living a heroic life but I fear I'm just mediocre]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]At first I subscribed to Salon because it was a fine news source, with all sorts of diverse reporting. Also, because they had Mr. Blue, and eventually his replacement, Carey Tennis. Now it's JUST "Since you Asked" and really not much else...but from time to time he writes something that makes it so worth it.
We dreamers need a light touch. Otherwise we get into trouble. We get into trouble when the gap between our dreams and our lives is too wide and too deep. We fall in.
This is one of those gems. One of those crystalline little truths that inspires me to think, "Yes, that's exactly what I've been feeling, only I couldn't find the words to make it clear."
There are the words. That's just how it is, exactly so. We fall in.

This is news?
[Read the article: What you missed while watching "Dancing With the Stars"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]This counts as "news?" Save the twee snarkery for the amateur bloggers, Salon. Please, if you want to be taken as a news source, avoid this kind of partisan snideness. It's neither funny or informative. It's certainly not news - at least post it as "opinion", for cryin' out loud.

Less Snark, Please
[Read the article: What you missed while watching "Ask a Ninja"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Dear Salon;
Your debate coverage has thus far been too precious and snarky by half. Injecting unfunny ironic asides is no cleverer or more entertaining than the guy behind you at the movie theatre who can't bear to keep his wit to himself; and as far as I'm concerned, about as welcome.
Please write more like grown-up political reporters, and less like twenty-something snark-o-matic bloggers.
Regards;
David Krieger

Who knew?
[Read the article: "Beowulf" vs. "The Lord of the Rings"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Who knew Gary Kamiya had poetry like this in his soul? This is a loving Jeremiad to both Beowulf and Tolkien, if also a damning indictment of Zemeckis.
I hope Salon has many more such elegant and fine works in the future - and that they leave it to Kamiya, and leave Andrew O'Hehir out of it.

Cary Tennis, idol of millions
[Read the article: I'm a suburban husband in my 40s and I think I'm getting depressed]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I am 36. It is my sincere hope, that when I grow up, I end up just like Cary Tennis.

Wait...
[Read the article: The best-laid plans]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Didn't I read this on livejournal? I thought the web 2.0 was giving content like this away for free, now, rather than paying people for it.
If you can get paid for this kind of stuff, I've got a career ahead of me, churning out all sorts of inconsequential, slightly nostalgic, mostly pleasant, wistful self-absorption!
