Hardly news or surprising

Unilever was the company that bought Nutrisystems Slimfast and Ben & Jerry's in the same week 10 years ago.

Besides, these subsidiaries all operate independently except for the finance functions, tax, and legal. Branding and manufacturing at one entity never ever talks to anyone in another subsidiary.

Might help to have an expert

The expert offers no details and no ideas. I can get this kind of expertise on CNN. Plus, the oil pipeline must always be mentioned when discussing Georgia's "move to the west"

New online personals opportunity

So online personal ad writers should skip their Myers-Brigs alphabet soup and list MHCs.

Not reassuring even in the assurances

"And we'll remember this comment when Sarah Palin becomes the first woman President of the United States Senate."

Whoa, Elephantman. You have McCain winning the election and then dying??

That's... that's not good.

Need a better graphic

I've not even read the article yet but feel compelled to express my dissatisfaction with the graphic. I come to Salon for content, not for snark. But reducing the criticism to the simple sex-based roles, you make moot any legitimate critique in the piece and give a simple reply point to those who advocate her candidacy.

Fact Check on fact check

Granted that Palin hardly seems to be the smartest person in the room when the room is occupied by people not appointed by Palin, by I'm still not clear on the primary statistic example.

She said, "Alaska..nearly 20 percent of the U.S. domestic supply of energy". You said that wasn't even correct about oil, "Alaska accounts for only about 13 percent of U.S. oil production"

But the EIA document you site for oil and gas figures tallies different:

Under Crude Oil for 2005, 1829.4 Trills from Alaska / 10,962.6 Trills from all of the USA = 16.69 percent.

Even the politics is confusing now

I admit that I don't always follow the content of financial failure articles during the first reading. But now I don't understand the politics either: who the fuck cares what the house republicans think???

If the president is on-board, house dems agree, and the Senate has 51 in favor then it's law of the land right?

Don't tell me they're holding up what is supposed to be the only thing between us and breadlines because everybody should be happy.

Hell, the house repubs are probably more than happy to go back to their districts and campaign on having to stood up to socialism and fat-cats and any kind of economic system more complicated than hunting and gathering.

Where is the tech analysis here?

You're the new tech blogger here?

How about explaining that the French reprocess nuclear fuel from fast-breeder reactors and the US does not use this type as a matter of policy. Fast breeders make plutonium which is much more easily the base of a bomb.

How about explaining all the possible new designs out there that may or may not be safer than the 30 year old ones approved by the US?

How about at least pointing out that in absolute terms the US is the WORLD'S LARGEST PRODUCER OF NUCLEAR POWER (nearly twice that of France).

http://www.eia.doe.gov/emeu/international/RecentNuclearGenerationKilowatthours.xls

We have more people, more land , and we just use so damn much that the percent is lower.

Seriously, that was pitiful.

Why kind of reactor are they building in Venezuela? is it standard Russian design or new? is the same old Soviet design at Cherynobyl?

Brother is one, plus wife and son.

I thought having a wife who is a reformed substance abuser was the Mulligan.

Then there is son Andrew who left the board and audit committee of bank for "personal reasons" just before the bank failed. Why didn't he pick up the phone and talk to dad about the turmoil in the banking industry so he could suspend his campaign in August to put country first?

Of course, there is now Joe who is embarrassing more for his style and speech than for his actions.

It is not surprising that McCain is trying to attack Obama based on association. It is Rovian gambit delta: examine oneself and project one's own weaknesses on one's opponent.

Bush from the dead

One of the things that freaked me out about the Florida recount in 2000 is that during 77 days between election and swear-in, the number of deaths of voters in the state was bound to be greater than the final margin of victory.

It's possible that the count of those living at the time of the inaugural favored Gore.

Somebody better be reading a dictionary

I too have gone back and forth on bailing out / nationalizing the big 3 auto companies. But given the news yesterday of an additional 10 billio going to AIG to cover bets on markets that didn't even have any securities behind them I have come round.

I want to see a Republican senator having to stand and talk from now till Jan 2. Make it a REAL filibuster. I am sick and tired of the country thinking that everything in the senate needs 60 votes to pass. Make them explain for days on end why it's better to pay all the unemployment benefits that will stack up when the manufacturers fail. Then we really will be paying people to not work.

bubble busting

I hate to break it to you Stephanie, but nearly all of your reviews reveal nearly all of the plotlines. This movies hinges more on a reveal than most so you're more sensitive to it.

Though a movie is more than its plot, I still prefer to not know the details of every twist. Similarly, I do not wish to know the arc of each major character before viewing. It is a narrow road to walk between a column that evaluates a film and helps readers decide whether they will view it and serious critique of art meant to be shared with others who have their own critiques.
