"Talk to Me" - Growing Up in Washington Area in '60s
[Read the article: "Talk to Me"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]After reading this article, can't wait to see the movie! I remember Petey Greene and listened to his show. I also think that those of us that grew up in the Washington Area remember 1968 very clearly; what it meant for our country and what it should have meant for our country.
BTW, WOOK (WOL's competitor) was 1600 AM on the radio dial and had its offices off of Frederick Pike in Rockville, MD. According to my father, this was a radio station even when he was growing up in the Washington Area.

Don't Give Up II and Laurel962
[Read the article: Are men spoiled rotten?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Great post Laurel962! Does your screen name have anything to do with the town in Maryland?
I have read all of the comments. Most are very thoughtful; some just mean.
As a DC native, living in that area has it special challenges. My situation made things more difficult. Having gotten divorced at a young age with twin infants to support, I knew I needed a job that covered the basics. This made it difficult to even go out with girl friends after work since I had to be home at nite. Dating was impossible. Men, rightfully so, told me upfront that they didn't want to date women with small children. So from the time I was 24-25, I devoted myself to my kids and career which ultimately demanded a lot of travel throughout North America.
I remember the article that said that women over 40 had just as much chance of meeting someone as being hit by a terrorist. Then 9/11 happened; turns out I was a DC native in New York. Talk about (un)lucky!
Then, at 58 , I met someone. He was 41. He is fabulous and we are greatly compatible. True to the script, he is tall, dark and handsome. He is an elegant snowboarder; I'm a skiier. He is funny and very kind. We both run. He has been training for a marathon. We met at work (yes, in the smoking area) and it has been two years now. I've never been happier!

Amerigo / AJCalhoun / Hiring of PhDs
[Read the article: I'm a nude dancer trying to finish my Ph.D.]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I'm usually just a "lurker" since the threads are typically closed by the time I get to read comments... Guess the servers are at capacity pretty quickly. But these thoughts occur to me:
Amerigo...
Love your writing and sense of humor! I still chuckle about the two kinds of women: 1) Those who want Jimmy Choos and 2) Those who want granite top counters. (Why can't we have both!?)
Sounds like there is much humor in Durham/Chapel Hill contrary to the perception otherwise. I, too, have seen that Cafe Risque sign. (We sometimes get out and about up here in Oxford.)
AJCalhoun...
I feel I know you. Sounds like you grew up in the DC area and maybe in PG County. A number of your experiences from the DC area ring so many bells although I haven't been to any strip clubs. I do know where the Surf Club is/was.
Hiring PhDs...
Having been a hiring manager for the Fortune 500 company that put Research Triangle Park on the map, I'll tell you that PhDs have a large sense of entitlement and are not necessarily agreeable to getting their hands "dirty" with the day to day work nor take the time to understand the business problem at hand. This attitude is sensed by the existing employees and the existing employees thereupon eat the PhDs' lunch. Teamwork is poor. I have seen this dynamic and had to work thru it/around it; consequently, I have steered away from PhDs.
I have been impressed, though, by those that have worked their way thru school regardless of the discipline or degree.

More and Specific Help on Odor / Urine, etc. Removal
[Read the article: I'm living in filth!]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I hate carpets even if I did not have seven cats who are generally very good with their habits. (BTW, met a couple this weekend that had 47 indoor cats living with them
in their historic home.)
However, experience has shown that Woolite's "Pet Oxygen
Stain and Odor Remover" works rather well on carpets.
The important part is RINSING. Place a damp bath towel
over the Woolite treated area. Place something heavy
on the damp towel and let the odor/stain "wick up" by
letting the towel dry naturally. I've even used the
Woolite on wood and concrete floors. I find this
version of Woolite in the grocery store.
Another option and a wee-bit more expensive is
"Pee-Pee" by Pet Select. I found it in the grocery
store too but less frequently. I'm sure PetSmart or
some store similar will have it also. This really
helps on stubborn odors. You need to use a spray bottle
to disburse the "Pee-Pee" solution uniformly.

Dark Helicopters (Unmarked) in Oxford, NC
[Read the article: Why is a U.S. Army brigade being assigned to the "Homeland"?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Lots of helicopter activity over this rural NC town of about 9,000 people lately. Saw one real low Monday nite as I was jogging. The "wino of the night" was walking towards me on the sidewalk. We both stopped short and gawked as the helicopter proceeded above us.
