  • It's time to pass the torch

[Read the article: My letter to the most important man in American politics]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

The days of the usefullness of Iowa and New Hampshire being bellweathers of the country to "to give underdogs a chance to break through with low-cost campaigning "

In the age of the internet, decline of independent "real" newspapers, increase in huge companies being the disseminators of what's "news"; Iowa and New Hampshire are superfluous. In fact, the whole primary system is out-of-date and needs to be overhauled.

What exactly is wrong with a national primary (we currently will have that this election cycle anyway.) Just have the primary in October and one month later have the real election. The electorates attention span is that of MTV 5 seconds, so why try to live with a 2 year primary season that we currently have? In fact, if the Democratic Party were smart, they would do this next time. Let the Republicans continue with the old expensive way and let the Dems have a National primary much later. They would need less funds to gain the attention of those corporate "news" providers because there would be no choice. The smearing of the prospective candidates by the other party and the fair-and-balanced-news-crews would be rendered worthless until the end when the campaining really started.

    This whole essay is "Please-keep-the-system-I've-known-for-the-past-27-years-intact-because-I'm-a-lazy-belt-way-pundit-and-I-don't-want-to-learn-anything-new-and-want-to-repeat-what-I-hear-without-doing-any-research"

  • Enough Repeating Right Wing Talk How abou some real reporting

[Read the article: Obama goes for the capillaries]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Why does Salon keep on printing Rush L.'s talking points? What the fuck does $400 haircut (which was not $400, but mostly travel expenses) have to do with anything in a Salon report?

Why don't you just come out and say it already: Salon endorses Mrs Clinton and all the reporting is slanted in that direction for the past year and for all future articles?

Not one of the current senators who are running in the primary stopped the nomination of someone who is supporting war crimes to be our attorney general. That should be the topic of discussion.

At least Mr Dodd has vowed to stop the amnesty for telecoms bill. Let's see if its just more than talk.

When Salon prints dribble like this article, why shouldn't the democrats be as bad as the republicans?

I give up. I'm outta here.

  • Check countries with Marriage - don't use US for these statistics

[Read the article: The gay marriage slump]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Since the United States does not have marriage for same-sex couples, this whole article is a bunch of fluff.

Yes, MA has marriage, but that does not grant the full rights of marriage. Until the Federal Government recognizes the constitutional rights (and other states as well) as provided by the "Full Faith and Credit" Article IV Section 1, the USA does not have marriage anywhere for same-sex couples.

Marriage, contrary to what other posters have said, is NOT by and from religions. Marriage was started by governments for PROPERTY RIGHTS; plain and simple. Check your history. Religions came along later. Citizens that are not afforded these property rights are not given equal access and are considered second or third class citizens by the government.

There should be and will be no "rush" to file legal documents cementing your second-class citizen status.

  • It's the idiocy of "heck-of-a-job" Chertoff

[Read the article: So long, Canada]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

The Canadian border crossing is just a very very small part of the nonsensical way we treat visitors.

    Example:

A week ago, the Costa Rican Attorney General with full diplomatic passport and a scheduled meeting with the US Attorney General, was detained for hours at Miami International Airport without the right to a phone call because his name "appeared similar to a person of interest" He was escorted to a ticket agency and forced to buy a return flight back to Costa Rica the next day.

    It's barbaric, it's absurd.

We need the inflow of foreign money and tourism. With the dollar at record lows, we should be having record number of tourists flocking to see our beautiful country and spending hard cash, but our system of entry is crazy and without reason and our tourism is suffering for it. A number of friends refuse to even fly through the US because you have to go through this crazy maze of fingerprinting, photo shoots, "secret black-lists", even if you're just going to get onto another plane and leave the country right away. I personally will fly around the US when I travel from one country to another, rather than subjecting myself to this procedure. My frequent flier allegiance is now with a foreign airline just so I don't have to fly through the US to get to another country.

It's high time that we get off the "fear" wagon and start to learn how to live in the modern world.

  • Obama also is a sponsor of government finger print registry bill

[Read the article: The Obama campaign's past two weeks]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

What I don't agree with on all these updates is, we can't be telling Obama that we'll support him no matter what he says and does. If he believes that he'll get the base vote even though he's been thumbing his nose at all of us who have supported him to "run to the center" then he'll keep on doing that. That's not the way to get a progressive candidate in the white house.

There are other parties out there where we can vote and choose someone other than McCain and Obama. That's the point we should be making to Obama as he runs very fast forward to the right (not center because he already was center). Remember he also supports a national finger print registry bill for real estate transactions! That's incredible!

I cannot vote for anyone who willingly gives up my constitutional rights such as FISA and the finger print bills do. That's the message that Obama needs to hear very loudly and clearly. Be careful in your run to the right because you'll loose your base. The idea that we keep on telling him, oh no matter he's better than the other one so I'll just vote while I hold my nose. There are other choices on the ballot.

An constituent of Obama from Illinois who is sick of Obama not listening to us.
