Ideas for Democrats
[Read the article: Hopeless]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]..."maybe Democrats who hope to win back the White House ought to spend a little less time on the separation of powers and the unitary executive and a little more on power ballads and fart jokes."
Maybe the Democrats should afirm each protection of the first amendment (and the others in their turn) and swear to the voters that they will protect each and every one of them (and list the Republicans abuse of these protections)
But, then again, so many Democrats should be thrown out of office to for their lack of fighting to protect these rights. It's time for a complete overhaul of congress. If they've been in office for two terms, they've already been corrupted.

It's North Carolina - come on
[Read the article: If my wife dressed better, would gay guys stop hitting on me?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Ok, a number of the posts say this man is gay and that they were in a gay bar. Other people point out that the writer did not specifically mention that they were at a gay bar, only a place frequented by gay couples.
IT'S NORTH CAROLINA. There is NO place in North Carolina that Gay Couples frequent who would be bold enough to send a drink over to a table with someone from the waitstaff EXCEPT if it were a gay bar.
Now, gay bars have the best music and DJ's (straight bars confuse Loud Music with the treble up high so you can't hear anyone speak with good music - gay bars use the bass so people can feel the music yet usually carry on a conversation) and straight people, even in North Carolina, will go to straight bars just for the music and freedom to be "less reserved" than you have to be in a straight bar (especially in NORTH CAROLINA.)
This man not only accepted the drink, but INVITED the gay men over to the table. He WANTED to flirt with them. Reveled in all of this, and his frumpy wife got upset. Now, he wants to dress his wife up like a doll, maybe he even wants to do her makeup for her.
As another post says: this man is gay gay gay gay gay gay and besides that he's gay. Did I say he was gay? He's gay.
Re-read the letter, putting in your mind you are in NORTH CAROLINA, for pete's sake, he's gay. (Oh, and on top of all this, he married a woman who doesn't look like a woman -- get a clue)

It's Long-Term Economics
[Read the article: A band-aid on a gusher]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Whether or not this administration or this congress decides to actually have meaningful laws to increase miles-per-gallon, GM and Ford should be reading economic forcasts and peak oil predictions for their own future.
Research and development for increased fuel economy has existed since the 70's and the car-manufacturers have purchased patent rights since then, yet they choose not to implement them.
Now is the time for the health of their very own companies to impose their own fuel efficiency numbers on their engineers. The asian car-makers have already done this and have taken over the market here. How much longer will it take for shareholders to demand accountability for their long-term investments?
If GM and Ford are to survive, they need to put vehicles on the road today that go beyond the narrow-minded thinking of our current oil-whipped government. For the sake of their own companies, for the sake of their share-holders, for the sake of their workers, their leaders need to think long-term, not just next quarter returns.

Bush, GHW vs Clinton,W
[Read the article: Happy Happy Joy Joy]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I wish comparisons to the election of 1992 would stop. Just because the first Bush had the same approval ratings that W now has, comparing this to the Clinton-Bush election is not a valid point. REMEMBER, there was a valid third party candidate that took votes away from the first Bush. It was this reason that the Republicans were so hateful to Clinton. They feel they should have won and would have won if there were only two valid parties in the election.
So, let's not get all smug about the 1992 election and Bush the first's low polling scores vs Bush the liar and his current low polling scores. I'm sure that the Brain remembers this point very well.

Headline completely incorrect
[Read the article: Was the 2004 election stolen? No.]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Farhad Manjoo can have his time to try and disprove any of the claims presented in Kennedy's piece. That's fine.
What's not ok, is Salon putting in a headline that is incorrect to the "proofs" that Mr Manjoo has presented.
The best that can be concluded from Manjoos article is "No one knows for sure whether or not Bush actually won Ohio" There's no smoking gun, but there sure are a lot of things that all seem to point in the same direction that Bush did not win the election legitimately.
Which all goes to the point of Kennedy's article. We can't have a democracy if the population can't believe the results. Election reform is necessary for our democracy to continue. Diebold should be banned from selling any more electronic equipment. Paper ballots / paper trails are not a luxury, they are a necessity for fair elections.
Kennedy's piece is a wake-up call to force our greased-palm politicians to actually install real reforms into our elections. Nothing less than we demand for third-world elections that we over-see is required for this United States democracy to continue.
It's time for Salon to stop using Mr Manjoo on this subject and use someone who can be objective.
