One of my favorite conservative political commentators, P.J. O'Rourke, wrote in his book, "Eat the Rich" that (paraphrased very badly here) it takes a lot a government to ensure the government is not in people's lives.
This philosophy is the antithesis of Reaganomics; which argues for deregulation and less oversight. The result of this has been the bubbles; which, argueably, has been the primary source of economic growth in the US for nearly 30 years.
The Savings and Loans Crisis begat the Dot Com crash which begat the Enron and Worldcom bankruptcy which begat the Sub-prime Morgage melt-down.
I'm wondering what the next bubble is going to be?
Under your Outlander's SUV body is the chassis of the Mitsubishi Lancer sedan.
Camel Trophy challenger it ain't, and the speed bumps at your local IKEA store will be the limit of this vehicle's off road prowess.
Score for the marketing men and women who have sold us on this crossover nonsense, but at least you can defend your green sensibilities by telling all offended environmentalists that you drive a boring, front-wheel drive, four cylinder Japanese station wagon.
The only reason why the Outlander is called a Sport Utility Vehicle is because that is what Mitsubishi's marketing men and women tell us to call it.
What you have bought is the modern reincarnation of the Colt Vista wagon. The same car, for all you NPR listeners, that Ray Magliozzi from Car Talk proclaims to be the most perfect automobile ever designed.
