  • Chan is my hero

[Read the article: The cat comes back]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

As someone who played and sang original music to audiences for many years, it's rare to see an article that gets close to expressing what that could possibly be like. This did. Chan is a heroin... alchohol is tough to beat... it's really harder than anybody knows to get up in front of strangers and empty your soul, rewarding in many ways... horrifying in many ways. The quotes from Chan were very well picked and maybe I'm just a weakling, but they made me cry. Cry in triumph.

  • Of art, artists, and the use of art

    To Pathetic:

So Pete Townsend is not deserving of Salon Arts coverage, eh? Such snobbery must have been one of the inspirations of "My Generation" forty-some years ago. Meet the new snob, same as the old snob.

    To Won't Get Fooled Again:

People seem to get really possesive of their favorite music. As though it should be played in only the conditions they dictate. How any copyrighted materials are used or published is up to the copyrighter, as it should be. If the use of this song offends you, there is always the mute button.

    To Power Chords:

Who to attribute the invention of the power chord to? I don't think it would be Ray Davies, but his brother Dave Davies, if indeed the power chord were a Kinks invention.

    To Guv:

Artistry and profit are not exclusive to each other. The artistic stand point comes first and, of course, an artist is going to talk about it's existential value and the creative process. The uses to which the art is put to should not inherently condemn the art.

  • So you think you know something about rock music?

[Read the article: Art movies: R.I.P.]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

As far as modern rock performers used to examplify your argument of the death of rock music, who do you pick? Maria Carey? Naomi Mather? Kelly Clarkson? All I can say is: You are not qualified to write about modern rock music if these are your examples of modern rock music. The amount of music and musicians in the world keeps growing and growing. The mainstream traditional radio paradigm has never encompassed the wonderful diversity of rock music, and certainly does not do so now. I suggest you do a few years of research/listening before you open your pen about modern rock music again.

  • It's like this...

Say you get into the unfortunate habit of shitting on your bedroom floor at 2:00am after a heavy night of drinking. Your wife is appalled by your behavior and threatens to divorice you. In your infinite wisdom, you say "There's no way my behavior is going to change, so just learn to love the smell of my shit."
