Original article: Relax, it's just foie gras

Mike Seltzer

Vasumundi's letters are highly suspect. The long list comparing the different types of eaters has clearly been twisted to favor his point of view - Just go down the list, and mere logic will refute many of the comparisons.

I also googled the guy who wrote it - Not exactly a dispassionate observer, and the more complete write-up is even more ludicris

Want evidence that we are designed to eat meat as well as vegetables? We have eyes in the front of our heads. We are hunters. Most monkeys are omnivores, though some have reverted back to being vegetarian.

That posters other various quotes and statistics are a healthy mixture of opinion, facts, and lies.

Original article: Obama's new message to Iran

You only get one chance to make a first impression

Naysayers on the right will muscle their way to their microphones. The Iranian government will wax poetic about the new recognition of their sovereignty.

But this is Obama's MO. He extended his hand to the republicans, and they slapped it. And this has not helped the republicans.

Now he extends his hand to the Iranians. Whatever goes on in future, private meetings, negotiations, tough talk and posturing, people all over the world will remember this overture. If things go south, the first instinct of observers all over the world will be to blame the obstinate Iranian government for spoiling this goodwill gesture.

A good move, I think.

Keepin' it simple

Science is hard. There are gaps in the science. Cells are complex. Science makes cells seem so confusing. God made cells.

So, Hicks, the Aussie...

...Had to sign a gag order. But although the Austrailian Government supported Bush, nobody is accusing them of being complicit in the torture of Hicks.

But Mohamed, the Brit, did not have to sign a gag order. And the British intelligence is being accused of being complicit.

And now there will be an investigation in Britain, of British intelligence, by the British.

Obama may object, and did thank Britain (pre-emptively) for keeping all torture information within the "Cone of Silence". But the dirty details of Guantanamo are bound to come out sometime. Obama probably thinks that it's better for these secrets to emerge across the Atlantic, rather than here.

How enforcable is Hicks' gag order?

To what extent any agreements between the US and Brtain regarding state secrets enforcable?

Bystander

Yes, I had read that. He was offered the deal under Bush. Maybe he smelled change in the air...

Y'know what is REALLY poor protocol?

Calling a bunch of countries evildoers, framing one of them with false WMD evidence, and bombing them back to the stone age.

And then not even bringing them any chocolates or anything.

In related news...

"...there's the possibility that socially conservative voters will be particularly energized..."

...Conservatives are asking the EPA to name social conservatives as an endangered species.

In more serious related news

Here in the great state of Vermont, the state house passed gay marriage by a wide margin (State senate also passed it), but not quite wide enough to override Gov. Douglas' expected veto.

When VT passed Civil Unions some years ago, popular support was running just shy of 50%.

Polls today in VT show overwhelming support for gay marriage.

Turns out that when you allow the gays to get together, it does not cause traditional marriage to fall apart.

AnOptimist

I see others have responded to you, but I want to make one other point, regarding headlines.

I agree, this should not be headline news at all. It is only because the right has spent so much time and money browbeating the public into thinking this matters, and bullying this issue to the forefront of the culture wars, that this is an issue at all.

Ya.

"Already, Boston Catholic Charities has been denied its adoption agency license because of their religious beliefs concerning marriage and the welfare of children. A New Jersey church group has been denied property tax exemption because they cannot in good conscience permit civil union ceremonies in church facilities. And individual service providers have been forced to choose between their faith and their profession. Religious liberty experts have said that these sorts of conflicts just scratch the surface of what we are likely to see if same-sex marriage becomes widespread.

It's about time.

The taxes imposed on the churches will more than offset this cost. Churches own some of the most valuable property in our cities.

Coincidence?

Obama's dissaproval ratings, among independants, is now what Bush's approval ratings were...overall.

Original article: Rove: Biden is a "liar"

At least one thing is true...

They would never let Bush be in a meeting all alone, unsupervised.
