  • A few commnets on Ray's and others

[Read the article: You must remember this]

First this is not a boring fact presenting war or history film, it is ART.

    From RAy:

"...with some sort of feel-good jazzy sax melody. It left me turning down the volume even at expense of missing the commentary." maybe if Ray had not turned off the volumn he would have gotten the conncetion and heard the content of the letters written home. This was the music America listened to during the war.

Burns does give the numbers of enmey and allies killed in each confict he covers. In fact in showing the bombings of German cities he shows the ruins form our of our bombings, how it killed civlians. Did you miis the piles burned German cilvian bodies piled in the streets.

In North Africa, I got his point about the failures. We had go to war in haste, the trops were not properly trained and the U.S had an incompetent leader in Africa, Teh Gemrans had better euwpment, TEh British hd been fighting teh war longer and had better traning. There was no glorificaitn of Paten, he was mentoned breifly, and Burns made it very clear that in Africa itwas training on the job for the U.S troops.

The techique of jumping from war scenes to back home makes a conncetion and is much more enjoyable than boring linear presentaitons.

"And I couldn't get over the fact that there was no difference between Sylvia's restaurant and any other restaurant in New York City. I mean, it was exactly the same, even though it's run by blacks, primarily black patronship. It was the same, and that's really what this society's all about now here in the U.S.A..."

    Yikes

Is O'Reilly finally getting it or does he just not get it when we says this stuff. I guess the best analogy I can make to demostate O'Reily's ignorance is this... HIs comment reminded me of a commnet made by my brother after my mother had a "guess who's coming to dinner" in 1968. When my first cousin (white) married a black man, my mom had a dinner at our house so he could meet the family and to show we were really progressive enough to accept him. Aftewards my brother said" Well gee you forget he's black once you meet him".

Thanpart thank you for so eloquently pointing out the errors of the nay sayers. I think one thing tht is refereshing about the Burns film isit not all the glory and guts tht has been fed in the past. He gets to the heart of how this war it affected ordinary people in differnt ways.

I brought home to memories of stoires my mother and father used to tell us. My father had to regiser but did not fight in WW2. Healready had a fmaily of five, I was not born until after the war. MY parents had already been thourgh the depression lost and bought back their farm, things were going well, then America entered the war. I heard many stories of rationing: waiting 2 years for a new sewing machine, not being able to get canned foods, shortage of flour, having to make sure nylons did not rip as mother could not not get new stockings, not being able to replace thier 38 Ford until well after the war. Anyone wo has ever lived wiht depression era and WW2 era parents have heard theses storeis of common sacrifice. My motehr till teh day she died save every ice of aluminum foil, plastic bag, etc and used the more than once.

I think the lessons of this commn sacrifice could be applied to others issues in our country today. Especially the envirnnment and over consumption. Just think if we all made a common sacrifice, not to drive large gas guzing vehicles, we all used less water and elctricity, we consumed fewer goods, what if we never bought anything unless we had the cash to pay for it.

Why did the president of Columbia invite Ahmadinejad to speak if he planned to badger him? If you don't agree with him then don't invite him. What a disgraceful display by Americans. It shows how arrogant and uncilivzed we really are.

  • The blame game

[Read the article: Ahmadinejad, big man on campus]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Who is rally to blame? So now we want to now blame Ahmadinejadis for the rise of Hamas.I am sick to death of this Irasel- Palestine conflict. I think the U.S. should stay out. We can hardly critize Iran if they are helping the Palestine after all we ahve been supplying Israel wiht arms for years.

Israel is just as much to blame for the rise of Hamas any middle east country. The fundemetalist Jewish leaders encouraged ortodox jews from America to immigrate to Israel for the sole purpose of building houses to occupy Palestine's land. The leaders in Palestine were a barreir to gradual negotiations. The United States support of Israel has given us terroism and still no solution to Israel-Palestine problem.

  • Pulling your leg

I think Ahmadinejad knew exaclty waht he was doing. He is very bright. He was jut baiting you all and pulling your leg, and you all fell for it. The guy is a little nutty and a pulbicity hound and eveyone feeds into his nuttiness by givinghim the publicity he seeks. He should have never been asked to Columbia if the point was to belittle and insult him. He is not even teh decison maker Iran.
