Why Thompson?
[Read the article: Fred Thompson's revealing back story]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]We have an administration with many people who had deep connections to Nixon and Watergate: Cheney, Rumsfield to name two. Maybe Thompson is trying to distance himself from that. What I don get is why are so many republicans are waiting for Thompson to run. Does his acting experience bring back memories of their hero Reagan, who gave us "Trickle UP" economic solutions? Thompson is not any different than the other R candidates. All these guys rant about family values, want to make all abortions illegal, most found God and new wives late in life and Thompson is' not much different. They are all pandering to the GOD Wing of the party, want no taxes, and support the failed polices in Iraq. None of them have any new ideas.

When did thongs beomce flip flops
[Read the article: Buh-bye girlhood, hello trampy 'tweendom!]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Yikes, when did teen start wearing thongs? I just had an amusing conversation with a nephew who was embarrased because his mom kept referring to flip flops as thongs in front of his friends. "Doesn't she know that thongs are girls underware?"
I replied ' Gee I thought thongs were those rumber shoes we wear in the summer" I'm pretty liberal, but let's get a grip. Parents need to say NO! Even babies aer being dressed in the latest fashions. Uniforms are not so bad. It saves parents money, and puts students on an even playing field in regard to style and income. Students should be thinking about if they finished their homework instead of what to wear to school. Save the style for social events.Of course someone who appears pretty cool can turn out to be not so cool out of uniform.
I went to a Catholic high school in the early 60s. The girls uniform was a jumper and white blouse. The jumpers had not been redesigned since the 30s. Boys had to wear pants and a nice shirt. No blue jeans. When wheat jeans first hit the market the boys tried to wear them to school because they were not blue jeans. After about one month, we had an assembley where the Dean of Boys told us all the "wheat jeans left nothing to the imgination". Tey wer baned and the girls started using their imginations. We were allowed to wear our regulloths the first and last month of each school year, so taht quickly sorte dus out n teh social-econmic basis. When we graduatd we had a BIg party at the sand dunes on the river where the grisl burned thier uniforms in a big bon fire.. a rite of passage.I guess that is a little too tame for today's teens.

Argument seems logical
[Read the article: Bjørn Lomborg feels a chill]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Bjorn's Argument seems logcial, but we were talking about this in the 60s & 70s and nothing happend. I do htink ther eis a need for urgency, but I agree we need to think about otherlong term consequences as we devlep new technology. Fro instance has anyone thught about waht to do with all theold batereis from Hybred elctic cars.
Humans are contrtibuting to global warming so why is no one is talking about popultin control? HOw abut talking about some slef sacrifice and less consummerism. It is great that peopel recyle, but whynot buy less to b egin with? In teh U.A we shuould invest more $$$ in public transoortation systems.
The rise in disease, infertile couples,is nature telling us we have over populated.

Post means after
[Read the article: "I'll be post-feminist in a post-patriarchy"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]"Get over it. Ideas change, language changes, society changes. The only thing that remains constant is a pedantic clinging to ideas we held dear as college seniors."..Wrong
If we are still questioning whether its time for a woman President, and in a time when the patriarchs and the "girls" standing behind them are talking about making all aboritions illegal feminsim is not POST... It is a continuium, as different movements over time, orchestrated by both men and women, try to put women back into their sexual boxes. We need still need feminists, both men and women, to fight for women's rights, and respect women as persons not just as women.
One first needs to understand the defintion of feminism. Gloria Steinman defined it as "Full equality for both Men and Women".
However feminism didn't start with Gloria Steinman in the 70s.
There have been many feminists movements over the centuries only to be stamped out patriarchs and the "girls" standing behind them. For instance the Wiermar regime, which existed in Germany between WW1 and Hilter, had one of the largest feminist movements in the world only to be stameped out by Hitler, using the same tactics used by the moral majority, pro-lifers and relgious right today.
Lisa Jarvis should read, Mary Wolstonecraft, The Rights of Women" 1788. Here is a quote from Wolsonescraft's introduction " My own sex, I hope will excuse me, if I treat them like rational creatures, instead of flattering their 'Fancinating' graces, and viewing them as if they were in a a state of perpetual childhood, unable to stand alone." While in the 18th century Wolstonecraft could blamed men, today I think she would could blame women too. Women today take a most righteous part in the tradition of being silly about thier own sex.

Stop terroris with siience
[Read the article: The president's escalating war rhetoric on Iran]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]The contant war mongerng from the Bush administrton just helps the terroists recruit more terroists. Let's just hope we make it to Jan 2008 before Bush/Cheney start another war. The U.S. destroyed the only country holding back Iran...Iraq.
I hope the next adminstration will stop talking about terrorism on a daily bais and take some postivie measures to help Islamic countires deal with fudalmentalist, islamic polticals. Using positive diplomacy, building positive ralationships within the middle east and rebuiding our ralationship in Europe instad of tring to export Democracy will help. The constant "evil empire rhetoric just feeds into the "fear" factor, which is teh basis for terrorism.
