Original article: Million-dollar babies

What about the envrionment?

What ever happend to the population conrol concept of the 60s?

I think it is rather selfish to have more than 1 or 2 chldren.

We have a global warming crisis coming and it has been caused by population expansion and over consumption. YOu cnnot keep putting ter inot a glass container eh same size ndyou cnnot keep filling up the earth. It does not matter if you can afford more than one child, it seems there is a moral responsiblity to

consider the resources used by over population.

Unfortunaely every time populatin control is mentioned, it is either wraped in racism or the abortion issue, and neither which has anthing to dowith population control.

I'm for some leadershhip on this issue. Leadersip onpolicies that encourage, but do not force, people to limit thier families to 2 or less, and encourge couple to adopt rather than use artificial insimination.

One way to do it is to limit tax deduction to two children.

Sex education could reduce need for abortions

Comprehensive sex education and access to affordable contraception could help reduce unplanned pregnancy and thus abortions. Unfortunately the same groups that fight abortion rights also work very hard to see that there is no comprehensive sex education programs in our schools and at the same time produce medically inaccurate “Abstinence Only” programs that misinform our youth.

California public schools are just a spotty as New York in the teaching of sex education. CA however refuses to take federal funds for "Abstinence Only" programs, and recently the CA senate passed a bill that requires all sex education programs must be based on medically accurate information.

This will prevent a lot of the "Abstinence Only" programs which are riddled with misinformation from being used in the schools.

Reacton vs Proaction

Thanks Garrion for your honest and humorous right-on view of this tradgey. Once again our failing infostructure come into to view and will fade again. One has to wonder why our leaders cannot take some poractive measures and raise tax dollars to upgrade our inforstructure instead fo waiting for a tradedy like this. Katrina was natural disastor but the faillure of the levy was the government neglect to give teh money to repair the levies. Our leaders could save millions by being proactive instead of reactive.

Garrions comments about taking care of ourselves is

exactly the idea behind republicans NO taxe schemes. Tax revenues take care of systems that keep us safe and provide us with a decent life. The U.S is so far behind the rest of the "weathly industrialized world" in regard to inforstructure. The no-tax conservatives always bring up places like eastern bloc ,India or third world countries whenever anyone talks abut this. Yet in Japan they had the bullet train in 1969 and have incredibale transportaion sytems. France had the TVG in 1984. The bidges and inforstructures and transportion in Eurpoe are so much more advanced than ours. Architects and Engineers who come from these countries are amazed by the lack of quality and good skilled laborers in this ocuntry when tehy are hired to build structures in the U.S. We like to think we are the richest greatest industraizled nation, but we need to catch up on transportation and inforstructure...

Instead of pouring billions into failed attmepts to export Democracy, our leaders need to take care of our own Democracy and infostructures.

Governments are neccesary

I am always amazed at the republicans who talk about making government smaller and privatizing systems. It is the responsibility of the government to provide certain structures and systems for the pubic, and it is the repsonsiblity of the "people to pay taxes to raise revenue so all of us can benefit fomr those systems. Republican Privitizaton schemes without government oversight more often than not ended up in some kind of waste of money or fraud.

Bridges are just the tip of the iceberg as far as transportaion inforstucture that need upgrading. The U.S. air trafic control system is way behind Europes and Japan's. It is in need a tremendous modernization to match those of other nations we fly into and out of. Our mass transist and trains sytems suck compared to Eurupe and Japn. Even China has surpassed us in mass transit.Instead of spending trillons on weapons of mass distruction, we need to spend trillions on mass transportation.
