What Was Before Will Be Again
[Read the article: The NYT on the administration's "debate" over whether to attack Iran]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I repeat myself but sometimes the simplest answers are the best. Bush ONLY uses diplomacy long enough to claim that he's TRIED diplomacy and that the other side is unreasonable and immoveable and therefore, military action is unavoidable and necessary.
Bush "debates" are for the consumption of the MSM and the American people. They are designed to give the impression that the President is a reasonable man, seeking the advice and input from his many advisors, who will make a logical decision based on facts (remember the Iraq Study Group?). That has NEVER been true of Bush and it never WILL be!
For whatever the reason, Cheney rules! If he and his neo-con cronies could steamroll Colin Powell, what chance is there that they will listen to a black WOMAN? Bushco is misogynistic AND bigoted. Powell was and Rice is there for "show," but it's all a facade. They have no more sway over the decisions and actions of this administration than the Democratic Congress!
If Bush is backed into a corner (real or imagined) and forced to choose between military action and patient diplomacy, he will choose military action EVERY TIME!
The only way we avoid a war with Iran is if Bush is impeached, the military rises up and stages a coup, or all of the Joint Chiefs and senior generals resign in masse. Even then, Bush will probably find enough military "yes men" to carry out his aims (see, "Petraeus and Pace").
To put it simply: barring some "Deus Ex Machina" event, we're SCREWED!

Sarcasm Anyone?
[Read the article: Richard Cohen's brilliant (and unintentional) exposé of our media]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Glenn,
Do I sense a bit of sarcasm dripping from your proverbial poison pen? GOOD! The Fiefdom of Beltmania, complete with its courtesans, male prostitutes and jesters, deserves as much vitiol as can be heaped upon it! Their closed and cloistered assylum (Washington D.C.) has (in)bred a colony of disconnected, self-righteous, sanctimonious, slobbering boobs, whose sole purpose seems to be the perpetuation of their own mutant "species."
The more I read of this kind of journamalism, the more I feel that we have indeed gone "through the looking glass" into an "alternate reality;" similar to the old Star Trek episode where Captain Kirk and crew slip through to a parallel world where good is bad and bad is good. Our country, the one that we were raised to love, honor and respect; the one whose moral foundation of freedom, liberty and justice for all shone like a beacon to the rest of the world, no longer exists. High crimes and misdemeanors go largely ignored and mostly unpunished. Our leaders lie with impunity and without consequence. No one is responsible for ANYTHING, so accountability is non-existent - at least for the rich and powerful. But if, heaven forbid, one of Beltmania's own is held to account, the whines and wails and screams of "INJUSTICE" can be heard far and wide throughout the fiefdom.
I am truly ashamed of what we have become. I am even more ashamed of my fellow citizens who view all of the injustices, all of the anarchy, and simply carry on as if none of it really matters. Then again, when less than 20% of the population believes that America is on the right track, perhaps there is still hope. The question is: What can we do to move our people to ACT; to change the status quo; to make America - America again?

No. Not priceless.
FRINGE LEFTIE
John Kennedy said, "Let us never negotiate out of fear. But let us never fear to negotiate."
Had he followed Podheretz' advice during the Cuban missle crisis, you and I would most likely not be writing comments today on the internet. Kennedy DID use a show of force by blockading Cuba, but the blockade led to a diplomatic solution to a very dangerous situation. What he did NOT do was bomb the Russians and Cubans to smithereens and as a result, WE were not bombed to smitereens, either. You may think we'd have been better off had we engaged the Soviet Union in a nuclear conflagration but I for one, am thankful that Kennedy, the "fringe leftie," believed in diplomacy and worked for peace. My life, which would have ended in 1963, has been quite enjoyable as a result.
By the way, Jebbie, how many tours of duty did you serve in your lifetime? You seem to be very willing to put millions of lives at risk. How about your own or the lives of your children?

Obviously, I misunderstood your comment and I owe you a sincere apology. Thank you for your service. We are approximately the same age so if we ever have the opportunity to get together for a beer, I'll buy. I owe you at least one.
Sincerely!

Two Questions
[Read the article: How did the Bush administration use its secret eavesdropping powers?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I have just two questions:
1. How can ANYONE not think that the BushCo was illegally wiretapping citizens? They have built an entire administration around BREAKING the law with impunity; without conscience or consequence.
2. Whatever happened to the good ol' Republicans who believed that the government couldn't do anything right? Are they really stupid enough to claim that Bush's reign has been a model of efficiency, competence, and compassion? By continuing to blindly support their Commando-in-Chief, they have enabled Bush/Cheney in the serial "execution" of our republic, our Constitution, and our legal system.
