Iraq
[Read the article: Iraq: American public opinion vs. a "small but powerful group"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I would really like someone to ask the Presidunce, "Do you intend to stay in Iraq forever?" Assuming his answer to be some variation of "no," I would like the follow-up to be, "Saying that we will not stay in Iraq forever means that we intend to leave at sometime in the future. THAT is a timeline. If our enemy knows we're going to leave at some point, won't they just 'wait us out' until we leave and then, wreak havoc in the country - and if so - how is that different from announcing a timeline of sometime in 2008?"
If, on the other hand, he's honest and says, "Yes, we intend to stay in Iraq forever," he is forced to reveal his TRUE intentions and the American public will finally see Bush for the warmongering imbecile he is! I've been waiting a long time for someone in the press to ask this simple, salient question and then, hold "Dear Leader's" feet to the fire until he gives "We, the people" a straight (honest?) answer. "Cold-spell in Hell," you say? Maybe, but we can dream, can't we?

Of Haircuts and Heresies
[Read the article: Anatomy of Beltway conventional wisdom]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]As one who is "follically challenged," not only do I wish I had enough money for a $400 haircut, I wish I had the hair to make such an expense possible! Next thing you know, these wise, insightful, "investigative journalists" (spewers of Drudge-sludge) will be checking the power bill of Edward's hairstylist in order to analyze the size of his carbon footprint (electric clippers, you know)!
What is more hypocritical: A rich politician who gets an expensive haircut and still works to eliminate poverty, strives for the betterment of the middle-class, supports a worker's right to organize, and increasing the minimum wage...
Or a rich politician who gets an expensive haircut (at taxpayers expense), who's main purpose in life is to screw the poor, gut the middle-class, and give away untold billions to his rich, politically powerful cronies in the form of taxcuts?
I know which man I'd choose to be MY president! And for those idiots in the MSM who think they can "frame" my view as they did so many others in 2004 and 2006 I say, "Fool me once, shame on - shame on you ... fool you can't get fooled again." The American people have (hopefully) moved on from this imbecilic and inane method of manipulation. There are far many more important things to worry about than a man's haircut - matters of life and death. Get over yourselves and report on issues of REAL substance!

Abu Gonzo
[Read the article: Alberto Gonzales testifies]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Glenn,
One seeming exception to your analysis is Secretary of Defense Gates. He seems to be refreshingly honest (for a member of Bush's cabinet). Do you think that Gate's relatively long leash is because Rumsfield's departure is so fresh in everyone's mind? How long can Gates last when he says things that actually make sense and tend to undermine the President's "spin?"

Signing Statements and 2008 Dem Candidates
[Read the article: Interview with Charlie Savage]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]It would seem to me to be a VERY good idea for the current crop of Dem candidates to state, unequivocably, that they will work to roll back the unprecedented power-grab by Bush's executive branch, recognize and respect the role and power of the judicial and legislative branches, and return a sense of balance and efficacy to our government.

Not Again!
[Read the article: I saw John Edwards in the shampoo aisle]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]ENOUGH ABOUT JOHN EDWARD'S HAIR ALREADY! John Edwards has hair. Mitt Romney has hair. Rudy Guiliani, not so much. John McCain, even less. I want to know the candidates positions on ISSUES, not what brand of conditioner they use! Can a person have money and still care about the poor? I sure hope so, because the only one who'll be elected president in THIS country will be a multi-millionaire! Can a person have money, be a Republican, and still care about the poor? I haven't seen that happen since I've been alive (56+ years!). It is refreshing to have someone running for president who wants to represent ALL Americans - not just the big donors, politically connected, and powerful elites. John Edwards is not perfect, but he's addressing issues that most candidates make it a point to avoid. That matters, at least to me!

"I don't need no stinkin' Constitution!"
[Read the article: The right's explicit and candid rejection of "the rule of law"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]"ordinary power needs to be supplemented or corrected by the extraordinary power of a prince, using wise discretion";
The requirement of "a prince, using wise discretion" would seem to automatically eliminate George "Urkel" Bush from consideration. The problem with this theory is that, while the office of President remains, the occupant of the Oval Office regularly changes (unlike a monarchy, which is "for life"). The Law (as Paine stated) is to be King! As such, America can be subjected to the whims of certain spoiled aristocrats with delusions of grandeur and the IQ of a soapdish - for no longer than eight years!
