ACORN AND ACORNS

ACORN AND ACORNS

Two different acorns:

a·corn (?’kôrn’, ?’k?rn)

n. The fruit of an oak, consisting of a single-seeded, thick-walled nut set in a woody, cuplike base. (American Heritage Dictionary)

ACORN: The Association of Community Organizers for Reform whose president, Maude Hurd, reflected on last night’s debate as follows: ”Senator McCain failed to acknowledge the trigger of this explosive crisis: predatory lending, . . . If Mr. McCain is unwilling or unable to acknowledge such facts, how is he suitable to lead our country out of the worst financial mess since the Great Depression? Senator Obama acknowledged foreclosures as the root of the financial crisis and has pledged to help homeowners.” (From the ACORN website, http://www.acorn.org/index.php?id=12439&tx_ttnews[tt_news]=22340&tx_ttnews[backPid]=12387&cHash=0a859245ea.)

Ergo, Obama should be elected president of the United States.

If life were that simple, we wouldn’t need an election. Every four years we could just declare the winner by unanimous acclamation. That’s called Utopia.

Fortunately, we do have regular elections in our semi-dysfunctional democratic republic, which means ACORN’s Ms. Hurd has but a single vote and doesn’t call the shots. That too is fortunate in many ways, including the truth that foreclosures may have been one trigger for our mess but did not cause our mess.

The root of our financial crisis is government intrusion into the private market place and without roots even Ms. Hurd’s oak wouldn’t grow and prosper. (See “Psst, Ya Wanna Buy A House, Por Nada?” http://www.genelalor.com/blog1/)

What is this ACORN we’ve been hearing so much about and what does it have to do with “a single-seeded thick-walled nut?” The symbolism is fairly obvious, that the plan for ACORN is that its nut would develop in fertile soil into a great oak tree but whether that oak would be a black oak, a white oak, a pin oak or some other oak variety isn’t clear.

Regrettably, after being initially welcomed to the ACORN website, I repeatedly encountered this notice, ...

MEN, AND WOMEN, BEHAVING BADLY TOWARD SARAH PALIN

PALINCIDE?

I’m not sure what’s going on with Governor Sarah Palin.

I should re-phrase that to, What’s going on with regard to Governor Palin?

Sarah Palin hasn’t changed an iota in the last month since her designation as the Republican Vice Presidential nominee, but ever since the Obamarmy of character assassins/lawyers descended upon Alaska, her mainstream coverage has gone from initial infatuation to vile insinuation to positively nasty.

That’s a pretty fair barometer of Leftist feelings: They’re terrified of Sarah!

The preliminary attacks focused on her attractiveness and scant experience of two years as governor and six years as mayor of Wasilla, notwithstanding the fact that those eight years give her eight years more administrative experience than Obama/Biden combined.

The suggestion was that this woman was too good looking to be a politician, let alone Vice President of the United States. After all, what were we used to looking at? Hillary, Pelosi, and the slew of Democratic women who seemed to have, to be kind, gender identification issues and, to be kinder, no need to flee from scouts for beauty contests.

That ploy didn’t work.

Obama’s hatchet men and women proceeded to go after Bristol and her pregnancy, which led, naturally, to questions about the Palin family’s Christian family values. The hypocritical Left gasped that a governor’s child could let herself get pregnant, which must mean their family values were a charade. Lib kids were better prepared with porno sex education, condoms, pills and, if all else failed, the nearest abortion provider.

That slur failed, too.

Then they revved up and began their War of Vicious Innuendo: Sarah had an affair with a staff member, Baby Trig Palin was really Bristol’s bastard child, Baby Trig was Sarah’s love child, Todd Palin was a drunk driver because he had a DUI twenty years ago, Eli was being forced to marry Bristol, etc., etc., etc.

Those lies were soon headed for the dung pile where they belonged in the first place. However, the Leftist mission was accomplished. The lies were out there and the flies and maggots would multiply.

(Speaking of dung and maggots, the Saturday Night Live crew burrowed deep into the same dung pile. . .

DEBATE BUST?

DEBATE BUST?

All that talk about this being a watershed election year may be overblown.

At least based on reports that no records were set in viewers watching the first presidential debate, most people were more interested in watching something else than watching McCain and Obama square off last Thursday. http://www.thrfeed.com/2008/09/debate-ratings.html.

If that proves accurate, this statistic skeptic thinks the numbers could mean a number of things.

Either the mass of people are suffering from election overload due to the longest primary season in history or the Obama camp hasn’t ignited a blaze under as many new voters as it had hoped. Or, it could mean voters are already convinced one way or the other that the next three debates are superfluous.

Whether due to overload, lack of electoral fire, or closed minds, the big question is whether a sufficient number of people will still get to the polls on November 4th to elect as president an unqualified, inexperienced, uppity, arrogant, pro-abortionist, socialist, or John McCain.

I’m hoping for nationwide rain; inclement weather tends to keep down the turnout of the lazy and ignorant.
