  • No, Harry won't die.

[Read the article: Harry Potter and the prediction pool]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

We adults need to step back and remember that, despite all of us, this is a chidren's book series. Sure, children's books have dealt with death before, but Harry Potter has become a very good friend to millions of kids (and all of us overgrown kids), and why would a nice lady like J.K. Rowling kill off a bunch of kids' good friend?

Methinks there will be plenty of angst and emotion, but in the end Harry lives, and in the epilogue he will be shown years from now to be the new Headmaster at Hogwarts.

More predictions: R.I.P. Snape. R.I.P. Draco. Congratulations to Hermione and Ron: we always knew you two would hook up.

And of course, Voldemort: toast, in a serious way.

  • Makes you wonder.

[Read the article: Barack Obama in New Orleans]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Is Bill Richardson under pressure to prove he's Hispanic enough?

Does Hillary Clinton have to prove she's female enough?

  • It was that dumb last line.

    [Read the article: Dear Readers]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Mr. Scherer, the point of the article was valid, but that last line, "May the best woman win" really grated.

  • Angry man

[Read the article: Hillary is from Mars, Obama is from Venus]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Biraciality aside, I don't think that America would take to an angry black man. -- Afro Goddess

Hey, I don't think a voting majority in America would take to an angry man, period, regardless of his skin color. Let's not generalize on race in any direction, okay?

  • I felt elated after meeting George Romero

[Read the article: Amma's cosmic squeeze]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

What a trip. I stood in line to meet the guy that made some of my favorite movies, and he was kind and funny and greeted me warmly. I left feeling pretty good.

Still, if he had sucked the pus out of some poor diseased person's boils, I would have either, 1) looked to see if Tom Savini or another special effects guy was snickering in the corner, or 2) decided with great dismay that Romero was mentally disturbed.

George Romero: great director, nice guy, just another ordinary human being. Same goes for this Amma guru.

  • "Arrogant Atheists." Why not "Pushy" or "Uppity?"

[Read the article: Amma's cosmic squeeze]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Oh yeah,I forgot: "Pushy" and "Uppity" have already been used for other marginalized groups who dared to speak up.

  • Chrislrob, follow your heart.

[Read the article: Adventures in snail hunting]

If you feel badly about killing animals, then don't do it. You don't need to eat any animals in order to thrive and be healthy.

Fish feel pain. That's a fact. Tearing a hook through their mouths is torment for them. Allowing them to suffocate to death, as many fishermen do, is further torment.

People become vegetarians for many reasons. Personally, I realized that my concern for abused animals should extend to all animals. I did not, and still do not, want to participate in their suffering and death. So, I stopped eating them. If you feel similarly, then you should consider that, too.

Fortunately, if you enjoy the taste of fish, vegetarian faux-fish products are widely available, and pretty good too. My favorite is faux-salmon. (For those who wonder about this: I grew up eating animals and, for better or worse, have a lifelong liking for certain tastes. However, the fact that vegetarian versions of animal foods satisfy my tastes tells me that it's not the flesh that's important, but the spices and other flavorings).

  • Try also "Sundiver" by David Brin

    [Read the article: "Sunshine"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I'm looking forward to this movie. For anyone interested in this particular topic, I highly recommend "Sundiver" by David Brin, which is also about a manned (I use that term very loosely, which you'll understand if you get the book) trip to the Sun. It will also start you off on his amazing "Uplift" saga, which is six novels and counting.

  • Imagine the world without the Devil

[Read the article: "The World Without Us"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

From nonhuman animals' perspective, a world without human beings would be like ridding themselves of the Devil.

We conduct hideous and grotesque experiments on animals in laboratories. We keep them caged their entire lives. We keep them confined in filthy factories their entire lives before brutally killing them. We torture them for kicks. We kill them for kicks. We sacrifice them to our gods. We kill them for unnecessary trinkets made from their body parts, like ivory or fur, or alleged aphrodisiacs from their horns or organs. We poison them. We burn them. We drown them in cages or sacks. We fence off their water, we kill them to make room for cattle, which we then kill, and we deny them the habitat they need to live. We've been doing for thousands and thousands of years.

But we love our pets. Except for the excess ones who suffer and die in the streets and shelters because we neglected to spay or neuter them, or we simply got bored with them.

The world without us would be a pity for us, but a blessing for them.

  • How about a compromise?

[Read the article: Who are you, Anonymous?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Allow the continued use of Anonymous, but delete abusive letters that contain more abuse than substance. Granted, the latter is a judgement call, but that's why y'all make the big bucks, right?

  • Tragic. To me, those people are heroes.

[Read the article: A tragic setback for SpaceShipOne]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

The people working on Spaceship One are trailblazers. They are doing the hard and dirty and occasionally deadly work of making routine space travel a reality. To me, they are the true heroes of our age.

  • Reasonable Accomodation

[Read the article: Battered and fired]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

"Reasonable Accomodation" is a term under the Americans with Disabilities Act. According to the EEOC, a "Reasonable Accomodation" is defined as, "a modification or an adjustment to a job or the work environment that will enable a qualified applicant or employee with a disability to participate in the application process or to perform essential job functions. Reasonable accommodation also includes adjustments to assure that a qualified individual with a disability has rights and privileges in employment equal to those of nondisabled employees."

It has been established under case law that individuals with psychiatric disabilities have a legal right to reasonable accommodations in the workplace. A strong argument can be made that an employee traumatized by domestic violence should receive a reasonable accomodation.

Healthy Skeptic, you are a troll.
