  • It's not _that_ ugly--and there's more interesting stuff out there

[Read the article: Ask the pilot]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Yes, it's kind of an ugly plane, but like you say, you've mentioned it many times in the past. Enough. (Though I disagree with previous posters to this extent: the 747 really is a better-looking airplane.)

However, as an indirect result of this article, I ran across an interesting after-action-report on a 1997 Fed-Ex crash at EWR. (I lived 20 miles away at the time, and somehow never heard about it.)

A few more articles on NTSB AARs would be a lot more interesting. The one I found was this:

in which it discusses 'destabilized flare', 'pilot-induced oscillation,' landing-gear & wing failure modes, and other cool stuff. It also discusses what the FAA, Boeing, and Fed-Ex did in response to the crash. It makes fascinating reading even for a non-specialist.

  • I forgot to include the link:

Here's the article on N611FE, Fed-ex MD11 crashed in EWR.

  • Salon's very own Maureen Dowd

[Read the article: Queen Hillary's disruptive court]

Meow! Nothing like a nice, nasty gossip to get the emotional juices flowing. Viragos, egos, nastiness. Paglia's little number reads--as it often does--like a Desperate Housewives script. Presumably it matches DH in fictionality as well.

  • WRT declaring the war over.

[Read the article: WSJ Op-Ed page decries hatred of the president]

I'm all for it. So long as the second part in "declare victory and go home" comes into things. So good! Mission accomplished! Let's leave now.

  • Should have invested in Crow futures.

[Read the article: King Kaufman's Sports Daily]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

A lot of sports writers are eating some very tasty crow tonight, apparently. Tom 'Dreamboat' Brady stumbles badly, and all we hear is how spectacular the Giants are. Humble pie never tasted so good!

  • Obama has some pretty big states locked up

[Read the article: How will it all end?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I would be very surprised if he lost in either Virginia or Maryland this Tuesday. Each of those states has about 100 votes, comparable to MA and NJ.

  • What the hell?

    [Read the article: Blood-and-guts politics]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

With all the irrational spleen about paleo-feminists (or whatever), Paglia comes off as a parody of the 'over-emotional unobjective female' stereotype. Maureen Dowd once a week is too much; Camille Paglia once a month is also too much.

  • Whatever that transgene does, it doesn't break down phosphorus.

[Read the article: Should biotech piggy go to market?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

As any high school chemistry student can tell you, phosphorus is an element, not a molecule, and as such cannot be broken down further. Any implications to the other are plain pigshit.

Perhaps you mean Phosphate anion, [P04]3- ? Phosphates are used intensively in agriculture as a fertilizer...

Anyway, I am all for transgenic food. Lets do the timewarp again!

  • Amazing -- I actually agree.

[Read the article: Hillary's race against time]

    * No doubt, answering the phone wearing a suit at 3AM is a strange thing to do. Clinton can't even unbend enough to throw on a bathrobe.

    * Obama would be crazy to accept the VP slot, and unsurprisingly, he has said recently that he doesn't want it.

    * While there has certainly been some misogyny in the media, it has largely been confined to Sunday morning TV, and it is a long way from "an all-time high."

    * However, I don't understand her claim about Rush focusing on partisanship excessively for this election. Rush has always been about partisanship.

  • If Obama had a bowling alley in the basement...

[Read the article: The Obama difference]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

...I suspect he'd get to 150 in very little time. The guy is a great athelete--of course he can laugh off not knowing how to bowl.

"Black guys can't bowl." Not abad slogan as a modest appeal to white voters.

  • Can you say sexist?

    [Read the article: The dominatrix]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

An article on the 'doability' of the vice presidential pick, and whether she is more dominatrix than pinup seems like a prima facie case for sexism. I mean, like, what the fuck?
