Because McCain agrees with him...
[Read the article: Quote of the day]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]on some levels. Classic authoritarianism (although it still makes better sense to me as sociopathy)- if something goes wrong or doesn't work, it's ALWAYS the fault of "someone else". Better known as "fill in the scapegoat du jour". McCain still beieves we would have "won" in Viet Nam if it weren't for the backstabbing left (the DFHs), and that we're on the cusp of an honorable victory in Iraq, but could "fail" for a variant of the same reason. Bullshit, of course (to any reality based person with a triple digit IQ) but it fits into his worldview perfectly.
Must go puke now...

psychopathology on display...
[Read the article: Bill Kristol in a nutshell]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Glenn, dead on as always. For myself (granted I filter through my own professional biases) I simply can't see this behavior as anything other than as a variant of the personality disorders, primarily narcissistic and sociopathic. It's all there- the utter lack of guilt or anxiety, the inability to ever see themselves as wrong (and therefor their mistakes are ALWAYS someone else's fault), the surface glibness, the total lack of emotional depth or empathy, and most important, the failure to learn from their mistakes. Reality is distorted, history discarded. If you showed clips of Kristol's earlier statements to him, they simply wouldn't exist.
The upshoot of this to me is that, for the 30-40% of the population that exhibits his trait, there is NO reasoning with them- none. At best you can control the rewards in their environment (i.e. they can be managed if you are an effective boss and stay on top of them, but they never learn). I think Obama's folks understand this on some level- they aren't wasting any time or effort appealing to the un-reachable Republican base, who simply reject any facts that counter their prejudices. Instead, they're reaching out to the rational middle (which is prving larger than I had dared hope so far).
A hint for the non-clinician---if you find yourself increasingly obsessed by fantasies of strangling someone when you're otherwise a non-violent person, chances are that person is a personailty disorder. By the way, I was asked about whether there are any effective treatments? So far, the only ones proven effective involve .357 hollowpoints, minimum 200 grain load. The stake through the heart is probably overkill, but it helps me sleep better nights...

Hawk has always been a troll, but a better quality one. Probably went off of his/her meds. If not, a potential clinic bomber or assasin IMHO..

[Read the article: Bill Kristol in a nutshell]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]I understand your point, and can only plead that it's sort of an inside joke in the trenches of the mental health field (especially the stake through the heart part- try discharging one of these folks if by misfortune they hook onto you and you'd understand what I mean...) I probably should have said they should be treated the way they used to treat hoof and mouth disease...
To the other poster who was surprised by the 30-40% incidence, it freaked me out as well. It appears to be an increasing trend- raises interesting chicken and egg questions. I live in an affuent, heavily Republican Cincinnati suburb (BOEHNER is my congressman for God's sake) and have been struck by the frightening lack of conscience consistently demonstated by many of the youth here. There are certainly lots of good folks, but the financial upper crust seems hell-bent on raising a generation of sociopaths. The car dealers love it- amazing how many of these kids get a new BMW at 18, crash it, and get ANOTHER- way to teach accountability and responsibility! Hard to feel sorry for them as their 401k's crashed and McMansions go into foreclosure at record rates, especially when they desperately scramble to find some way to convince themselves it's the liberals' fault. Fortunately, very few of them seem to believe in therapy (since it requires introspection) , so I don't have to strain an empathy muscle pretending to care...

Heh indeed...
[Read the article: Rick Davis: The last 8 years encapsulated]

Correlation is not causation...
[Read the article: Steve Pearlstein's strange attempt to glorify Hank Paulson and himself]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]Therfore, we cannot determine whether being a right-wing idealogical whore (RWIW) causes one's brain to turn to shit, or in fact it is having shit for brains that causes one to become a RWIW. More research is needed! If I could uncover the true cause and effect, the Nobel prize in Medicine is mine! I can almost smell it! (Well, I could if there wasn't all this poop smell in the air...or is that Shooter preparing a post?) Oh well- back to the merely clinically crazy...

[Read the article: A devastating blow to John McCain]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]would be a mid-level "letters to the editor" writer (in terms of writing and critical reasoning skills) here in Cincinnati. Why is "willful negligence" a crime and willful stupidity not?
OTOH Palin drew a crowd here Friday described as being in the "hundreds". Hope springs eternal...
Of course Powell is jumping on board to try to salvage his reputation. Here's a challenge for the Repubs- if McCain is truly someone who works across the aisle and puts the country first, let's see how he works to support President Obama's policies...

What part of:
It's a complex situation, and both sides are far from perfect. Only an authoritarian or a simpleton would or could describe it in terms of black or white, good vs. evil. My objection is that some writers and speakers on "the right" are framing the situation in EXACTLY these terms, and stating verifiable falsehoods about crucial events in the timeline in order to do so....
Don't you understand???
there will be a quiz

The real McCain?
[Read the article: McCain looks lost on "Meet the Press"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]studies with aging and dementia show that as people deteriorate cognitively, their underlying emotional and personality structure comes out, unfiltered and undefended. The real McCain is bare to the world-the anger, impatience, and sense of entitlement (read: narcisism)- they are all there. It would be sad, if it didn't show what a self-centered prick he's been all along...
