seriously, I tried. And I couldn't get through a half hour. It was so boring. I couldn't keep any of the boring Irish brothers straight.
Oh my god, what a DULL DULL DULL show.
I ended up switching and watching some sort of Discovery Channel animal show and even THAT was better than this show.
No soul? How about NO INTEREST PERIOD!!??
To me, shows that have soul...
Classic soul:
ENOUGH Salon. ENOUGH of this woman's blathering nonsense!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
After all, she was one of the main instigators of the "Obama's not really black" and "He's not black enough" ridiculousness.
(Though I doubt there's ANYTHING that will shut her up, unfortunately.)
"How could a show with so much depth and soul possibly get canceled?"
Because those of us living in America since 2000 have had more than enough of a fantasy-land that focuses on Texans.
Call me pigheaded, but I'm so disgusted and fed up with the right wing wingnuts, and the fact that Texas elected George Bush to be governor and gave him a platform to become president of the United States and brink us to the brink of destruction that I don't care if this stuff is the return of William F-ing Shakespeare.
I simply will NOT watch a program whose premise is fictional small town Texas wingnuts, given that the majority of the real versions are the cretins who elected the idiot in chief and are in large part to blame for our current mess.
It's a red state/blue state thing, and if it means that a good show goes to the dogs, so be it.
The miserable years since the election of George Bush have shown us where good ole fashioned Texas values get you.
Frankly, the less we celebrate the so-called "values" of Texas, even in fictional tv shows about Texas high school football, the better off America will be.
I'm not on a crusade...truly.
I'm offering an explanation...as to why such an apparently beloved show just isn't getting the audience. And I'd venture that there are more people like me who just hear the words "football and Texas" and immediately assume the show a celebration of the machismo, wingnut conservative smalltown bighair Texas values that swirl around Texas high school football culture.
I'm not hating on all Texans, or this show.
The show may be great, for all I know. And I lived in Texas for 3 years, and I know that there are some sane, liberal and wonderful people there, and I have a number of fantastic friends who are there today, and not just in Austin, but in Dallas/Fort Worth and San Antonio. I venerated the beloved Molly Ivins, and knew Ann Richards personally and adored her. But let's face it...those people are NOT the majority in Texas.
The majority of Texans elected George Bush as their governor. And that provided him with the platform to become president. And the majority of Texans voted for him as their president. Twice.
Call it misguided distaste, fine...but after years of having George Bush and his twangy, Texan, act first/think later, yee-haw, pickup with the gun rack, "look at me I'm clearin' brush" crap shoved down my face in every government policy and international action, I'm downright allergic to pretty much anything even remotely related to it.
And that's why I've never had even the slightest interest in watching Friday Night Lights, despite any good reviews it's received, and why I still have no interest in it, even if they give it every single award there is. I simply can't even turn the tv to watch it.
I don't care if Hollywood gives a shit. I don't care if anyone does. And if this show is the second coming of drama, it's my loss, yes. And if it has 20 seasons, that's fine. I'm not for its demise. I'm not saying take the show off the air, and no one is threatening democracy.
I'm just telling you why I simply can not turn on the tv and put on this program. It's a visceral reaction. And I suspect I'm not the only one.
For me, "SICK OF WHAT 'TEXAS' STANDS FOR IN TODAY'S WORLD" translates to "NOT GOING TO WATCH FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS."
Forget the porn. People make mistakes, and can change their minds about stupid things done in the past.
But being gay is not a decision or a mistake. How you can reconcile the party you belong to, with its hateful, repressive and neanderthal attitudes about homosexuality, is just mind-boggling.
And to stand beside Ann Coulter, a bastion of venomous hate...
And now, to whine and play the victim about the fact that after you stood there, in front of a gay-hating conservative group, and a hate-mongering gay-baiter, people pointed out publicly that you have done gay films.
That is not being "outed."
Frankly, your past is the least of the problems.
You, Haggard, Foley, Gannon -- just another in a long line of hypocrites.
Even after Joan's protestations, it's clear that Salon has a very definite pro-Hillary Clinton, anti-Barack Obama agenda, and this clinches it.
Just watch...
IF (and that's a mighty big if, even to this NY born, ultra liberal Democrat who along with others, dislikes Hillary Clinton and her pandering-AIPAC-butt-kissing-shrill-uninspiring style) she gets elected, my money's on Joan to take a political appointment.
Which job you bucking for, Joan? White House Press Secretary, or Director of Communications?
I wrote to Salon a while ago to indicate why I would not be renewing my paid subscription, and this just reinforces that I made the right decision.
Because, If I want to donate my money to Hillary Clinton's campaign, I'll send the check directly to the campaign, instead of having it go via Salon...
