  • Stephanie...

    [Read the article: "Fool's Gold"]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Is so pretentious she has to say "pocket foulard" instead of pocket square. And she hates almost every movie she sees. I've stopped reading her reviews, except I love Donald Sutherland so I decided to take a chance on this one hoping that I wouldn't feel like throwing up after slogging through SZ's pretentious BS. Good thing I ate a small breakfast.

  • I was going to buy a digital camera but...

[Read the article: What will YOU do with your fiscal stimulus check?]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

...now I think I will donate it to charity. I have a mortgage and car payments and no credit card debt. But I am having career troubles and am planning to go back to school in the near future, but giving to charity makes a lot of sense! The charity benefits, and hopefully they'll use it to some degree to buy stuff which benefits the economy, and I get tax deduction. Win-win-win!

  • vegan masquerade

[Read the article: Hey, skinny bitch!]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I knew a woman who claimed to be a vegan. She wore leather shoes, drank diet soda and was seen only eating lettuce. She died of heart failure at 32. But even before that I knew her "vaganism" was just a cover for anorexia. I have known vegans who really care about their convictions and their diets. Some are strident yes, but some not. This new "skinny bitch" way is just a convenient cover for women to abuse themselves into a size 0.

  • @ gonzo

[Read the article: Somebody tell my husband to slow down!]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Are you kidding? I hope you're kidding cause that would be like the LW is his mommy and he is 9 years old! That's freaking REDICULOUS! He's being an ASSHOLE and she needs to, as others have said, tell him to cut the shit out and leave her alone. And, oh yes, GROW UP!!

  • sorry to add to the negativity but...

[Read the article: The best-laid plans]

This story was NOT well-written as many have pointed out. Where are the smart writers?!? And I'm surprised the regular grammar police didn't catch this one: "single-handily". Isn't it supposed to be "single-handedly"?

  • @ tmpmason

YES! I am as disturbed as you are by the reports of racist flight crews. But I would hardly blame the airlines for that. I think that's more a symptom of a growing American xenophobia.

  • martial arts

[Read the article: I'm perpetuating the cycle of emotional abuse]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Cary says "I suggest that you learn fighting arts, in order to find the pathways of violence and control in your body, in order to find how rage is stored in the body, and to find those postures that radiate power and protection, so that you may adopt those postures when you feel threatened."

Excellent suggestion, this will help you not only to deal with your anger but also your timidity! Go seek a dojo near you, any form, soft or hard, Tai Chi or Kung Fu or Taikwondo. Just pick one that feels good when you walk in.

  • it was OBVIOUSLY meant to be funny

[Read the article: MoveOn ad: correction]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

It continues to amaze me how many people who read Salon are humorless liberal automatons. Except prytania... your comment was HILARIOUS. A few others too of course.

  • joy!

[Read the article: The real high-school musical]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I smiled through the whole article and all the clips! As a former teen theater geek, I was in as many plays as I could in HS. It's a shame that all schools can't have theater programs. The skills learned while mounting productions last a lifetime and foster a love of music and drama and art and fellowship.

  • get an effing life!

[Read the article: Sick in the head]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I know several people who have DIED of cancer, and several who are fighting it valiantly and never complain. My mother has diabetes, arthritis and is blind in one eye and at the age of 74 rides her bicycle every day. I have MS. There are veterans returning every day from overseas with traumatic brain injuries and fewer LIMBS than they were born with. WAKE UP AND THANK GOD THAT YOU HAVE THE WITS AND THE VOICE TO COMPLAIN ABOUT YOUR IMAGINARY CRAP. I don't want to hear about it anymore. LORD! That this person should make money off of this crap is beyond me.

Fantastic story!!! Thanks!!! If you write a book or start a blog, let us know! And maybe you should team up with goodcelery. just a thought. :-)

  • the nature of friendship

[Read the article: My friend has gone bad]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

As a woman in her 40s I can tell you that the nature of friendships shift over time. The type of very intense female friendship you remember fondly from early years, high school, college and into the 20s can't be sustained. They're also just not very appropriate for real adult life. The late-night sleepover/study session/drinking till wee hours bonding that takes place is fine when you are in grade school/high school/ college. But when real life takes over, even if you are single (I am) and things like health concerns, how to pay the mortgage, mid-career crisis, retirement funding, not to mention all the stuff that goes along with a family if you have kids and a husband become your main concern. You may have a hobby to help you relax in your minimal spare time, but spending that kind of time and emotional energy with friends just can't happen.

I think the LW is going through a bit of a maturation process and her friend is stuck, as some others have pointed out. Cary's advice is really good. Move on for now and she may eventually catch up with you. She may not, but you have wonderful memories of your friendship so treasure those.

  • general hospital

[Read the article: Erica Kane is my guru]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

I've been watching general hospital in pretty much the same way as the author since high school. Tivo has mad it really easy to feed this addiction. When the news gets too bad and I get too stressed out, soaps provide a solace that only calorie-laden snacks like full fat ice cream can rival.

  • Many thanks!

[Read the article: Unsent letters, unvoiced questions]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

Many thanks and happy birthday! And thanks also for yesterdays wonderfully insightful and well-crafted answer to the man who could not get over his ex. It helped me a great deal, and judging from all the letters it helped many others as well!!!

  • ever been to Boston?

[Read the article: Public transit in Lyon makes life so much easier]
[Read more letters about this article: Here]

It's one of the most "European" cities in America. And it has a decent, integrated bus/subway transit system. Probably nowhere near Lyon, but worth mentioning anyway. Plus it's small enough that you can walk a lot of it.

  • Kudos to JC Miller!!!

Just that. Brilliant piece of writing! True and VERY well articulated.
